My battery is not charging . Tachometer is not working when I connect it to rectifier .
I disconnected rectifier totaly and connected tachometer on green/yellow wire from stator as signal. But there is no reading, tachometer only stays on 0. How can I check what is wrong, stator, rectifier or tachometer ? What should be the numbers on multimeter ? Bayliner capri 19 cuddy tops out 30MPH now . I don't know how many RPM, I have to connect tachometer

Re: Is it rectifier or stator ?

you need the rectifier for the tacho to work as it gets its output across one of the 4 diodes in the rectifier...to test rec ..disconnect totally ....ohmmeter pos to ac reads low and high when reversed ..repeat for other ac ..then meter on neg and again each ac reads hi low when you reverse the cables ..if you get a low low or a high high its buggered ...cheap from Rado shack ask for a bridge rectifier ..rating 10 A + 50v +

I think you have posted before, (Croatia) but I don't remember what I had for breakfast and it is difficult to read minds online: It would be really nice if you gave the engine year and size.

Assuming it is a bigger Force and not Mercury ignition, disconnect both leads from the battery charging side of the stator and test them for resistance. If they show resistance within tolerance, (I forget exactly what) then it is the rectifier that is bad.

Re: Is it rectifier or stator ?

Yes thats ok frank IF you reverse your ohm meter probes( set for 200 ohms) on the input wires ..one way around is not enough . Should show infinity in each case. Pos Battery lead at rectifier should be disconnected no need to unbolt from engine

Re: Is it rectifier or stator ?

I checked rectifier with ohmmeter and I think it is fine. When I connected pos-ac1 high , pos-ac2 high, ac1-pos low, ac2-pos low. Then gnd-ac1 high, gnd-ac2 high, ac1-gnd low , ac2-gnd low. I hope you understand . So I think rectifier id OK . I am afraid that stator could be bad then . Now I need to check stator with meter, how to do that, numbers ? Motor works, starts fine, max 30 MPH, not charging battery, tacometer not working. Is this simpthom of bad stator ? Thank you for your help.

Re: Is it rectifier or stator ?

Use your ohm meter on the cables (disconnected) and check for an infinity reading ( meter shows 1 on the left) that says its open circuit ..broken wire ....you could put your voltmeter on it (set for 200v AC ) and run it ....no output broken ..... even at idle I would expect 10-20v with no load...Also meter from one wire to ground ..if it shows zero ohms then its grounded ...in the end you may have to pull the flywheel if it fails any of the tests above and look for physical damage which you might be able to repair ..

Re: Is it rectifier or stator ?

I just want to inform everyone that my battery is charging again. All I did is take off the original rectifier and then put it back after I cleaned connectors a little . Now it charged battery to 12 volts and it is perfect . In the mean time I ordered regulator from China ebay for 4$ and still waiting for it to arrive . Is it better to leave the original rectifier now when it finally works or to put ebay regulator when it arrives ?
I didn't try tachometer is it working now, I will do that next time on the boat. I supose that is should work now when battery is charging. Thanks everyone
