i've heard of your fishing skills dave, you could catch a shark easily in that, but watchout for crazy firemen who keep thowing dogfish of their boats!

Dave: You're kidding, right? I saw a guy catch a catfish from one of these blow-up boats. The catfish fin punctured the boat, it started deflating and the guy couldn't swim. Luckily a nearby boat helped him out. If you caught a shark from it, your troubles would just be starting. HOWEVER, if you decide to do it anyway, please have a crewboat nearby with a video camera. I'm sure we would all see it on TV eventually.

Kaos
I assume you know that Great Whites are protected and you are not allowed to catch. Still are many sharks you can catch but only one I can think of in a one man boat. That would be sand shark and maybe a small blue shark. Sixgill, Sevengill, Soupfin, and even a legal leapord shark I would not try and land in a rubber raft at all unless it is like the Coast Guard uses. They use a 20 foot rubber raft with a hard bottom. I have caught a lot of sharks and can not think of one that was happy and calm when on board.
Good Luck, Lots of Great whites out here on West Coast.

What are you going to do with it after you catch it? ;) I think this would be the ultimate catch and release situation. :D

when you get tired of playing with the fish come to alaska with your hand held spear. that is an approved method of taking alaska brown bear under state game regs. maybe that is how they get so big.

Make sure the raft is not yellow........just like the commercial, the sharks might mistake you for a twinkie. :D

akriverrat

You may have a point (pun intended) :p

When I first read this post (which has to be a goof), I remembered that in the old settler's days, it was considered sport, to take on a bear, with nothing but a hunting knife.

I believe that bystanders usually shot the bear, when the human combatant was near death.

Guess that's what happens when you don't have cable TV

correct imformation. several years ago one of our state lawmakers made adf@w put it back in as an approved means when they tried to remove it in a general cleanup of the game regs. popular bumper sticker a few years ago... "send more tourists, binky loved the first one"... after anchorage zoo brown bear (named binky) got hold of one that jumped rail to get closer to bars for better picture . soon after, damned if he didnt get a second one . unfortunately he died not long after that. many blame the poor nutritional value of tourists.

Re: is it safe for shark fishing

You guys are gona think I'm off my rocker here but yes you have enoufgh boat. I used to shark fish with some guys in south texas and here is what we did. Rig a 6-8 lb bonita up with appropriate rig and then we would get on a swimming pool raft with the bait between our legs, yes the flimsey swimming pool rafts you are thinking of and swim the bait out to the drop off in the ship channel approxamatly 100-150 yards drop the bait and swim back set the clicker and wait for dark. Great fun and cheap.

I must admit the first time I went with these guys I thought they were off there rockers but this is in fact how they set bait. when my turn rolled around it was quite a weird feeling to be on this raft in shark waters with bait between my legs but it was the only practical way to get an eight pound bait out to productive waters for a shore fisherman as you cant exactly cast it now can you.

You could have more fun tuna fishing...an 850 pound tuna would provide an exciting ride. Try hand-lining for extra fun!

I'd like to see that! The last time i went shark fishing and the only time since, we were in the 10,000 islands in a 12ft boston whaler on the edge of the gulf. One guy was bailing and the other 2 were fishing and when we got one in the boat it was biting at everything. Good luck in that dingy!
