Is it safe to run a oil injected motor out of fuel for storing?

I have a 1992 Merc 40hp Oil Injected motor and have been running it out of gas for years when storing it for long periods of time to keep the carbs from clogging up, but I was talking to a friend at work and he told me that you should never do this cause it could harm the motor. Is this true or false. Ive been doing it for years and have not noticed any problems, but I'm no expert. Thanks for any input.

To be safe and good for storage - spray Storage seal into carb throats while motor is running out of gas.

Sounds like a plan. I quit running dry when I bought my first oil injected engine in '89 when it was a tank between the fuel tank and the engine.

However, I don't leave mine more that a couple of months without running either on the water or on the muffs, so I really don't store mine.

First -- you cannot run the carbs completely dry. It can't happen unless you actually drain them. If you treat the fuel with Stabil, Sea Foam or any of the other fuel stabilizers and then run the engine long enough to get it into the carbs, you can then fog the engine and put it to bed. Besides, you seem to be located in the south so your layup periods are very short.

Thanks for your replies, I have a 88 Johnson SPL that I have always disconnected the fuel line off and let it run its self out of gas because thats what my grandpa always used to do to the motor. My 40 merc was also my grandpas and it sat up for 10 years until we got it over hauled and I never remember him running to fuel out of the merc but I did this year for the heck of it, this is not a boat that gets used I just keep it around since its been in the family for a long while (13 whaler super sport ). But it looks like from here on out ill just keep sta-bil in the tank and run it once a month or so. And yes I am in the south and both my boats stay in Galveston so I never really "winterize" the motor since it never sits for long periods.
