is it safe to run the engine without the prop on it?

when i put it in the fresh water to rinse it i would like to put it in gear to check things out, is it safe to pull the prop off and run it or dose it stuff something up?. its a mer 500 50hp blueband.

as long as you don't reveit up! stay under 3000 rpms if any thing sounds funny stop!

Sorry Sloopy - I'll have to cast a no vote to that at any RPM. The prop acts as a flywheel and helps to prevent an inadvertant overspeed which can happen very quickly with disasterous reaults.

Running it without the prop. is fine, just DON'T put it in gear.

I hadn't really thought about it but why not run in gear without prop. Keep the revs down, but the flywheel is on the other end and the prop shaft is more apt to whip with a out-of-balance prop then it is without a prop. Not trying to start sh**, just curious.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Not clear to me why you want to remove prop to rinse motor .I assume you mean flush motor.Do you have access to flush attachment?Are you rinsing in barrell and don't want to risk contact with side?Don't need to put in gear to flush anyway.Check what things out?
