I have been watching this starcraft threads for over a year now and have really gotten an itch for one and thanks to everyone for all the knowledge you have unknowingly imparted on me. After a long patient search I found this one. Looking for an opinion from you guys. The wife says spend more and get a newer boat but I enjoy tinkering with stuff and this looks like it could be a good little project. BTW post #1.

If the motor runs...not a bad deal, but I would offer $500 and negotiate from there.

Be prepared to find that it needs new floor and foam and/or transom. All are easy fixes...they just take some time/effort.

I am very aware of what the potential problems could be however if the motors is in as good of condition as the seller has stated on the phone I think its worth the effort to throw a floor in it and a few seats and use the hell out of it. I need a fishing/hunting boat to get me up and down the Missouri.

i blew up the pix and looked at exterior transom plate. generally you can figure if this and the floors are shot, you WILL need to do the transom too, so factor that into your considerations. 50hp twin won't stress transom as much as bigger/heavier motor but that old wood has a constant pull of 150-200 lbs trying to bow it outward 24/7

that said, this would be a good Mo river boat....hull that dents instead of shattering if you hit a snag or floating debris

Thanks for the input. I have a budget of 1500 if I can get the boat for half or less that will give me enough cash to do the floor and transom if need be and add some decent seats.

I think it's worth it for a nice 16' SS hull. That's an electric shift Evinrude that I wouldn't throw much money into. If it runs though, I'd certainly run it.

around here that would be a good price but floor and transom are a good bet for replacement, and definately buy some seats LOL

Re: Is it worth the money?

Well I made the 3.5 hr drive to go check out the boat. Good news is the motor was gone through 100% 4yrs ago and has been in a barn ever since. 150psi on the compression check and fired instantly. Bad news transom was so bad I could put my finger all the way through to the aluminum and the floor was bad enough I didnt think it would be a good idea to really jump on them. So I offered him 600 and he acted like I had said something about his mom and said its 900 obo. So I asked if he had a better offer and he said he had 2 more people coming to look. At that point I said 700 and he said "Nope, I will just go enjoy the AC the rest of the day" my reply was thanks for your time and hopped in the truck and headed home.

So if some one really wants it. Its in Lineville IA and good luck negotiating with the seller.

Re: Is it worth the money?

good move on several fronts
1. life is too short to waste it dealing with jerks
2. if SWMBO already thought you should have gotten newer boat, she would Not Be Amused when the transom started coming out as mulch. restos can be scary to watch, esp for spouses. like being on the back of a motorcycle someone else is driving
3. you left it friendly with seller. sometimes they get more reasonable when the other folks walk away after seeing the powder transom. not many boat buyers aside from the ones on here who wouldn't be scared off by stuff like that.

and now you know some of the Qs you need to really pin the seller down on before you make the drive. sorry about the wasted 8 hours. this was just one of the frogs you needed to kiss before finding the prince(ss)
