2005 Merc. XR6 - 150HP.

Out for the second time this year, boat ran great the first time out needed a new #2 coil and replaced impeller, didn't notice any problems at all. I was running at about 4,000 RPMs after a good warm-up. Dropped down off plane and lost RPM's. Horrible sound coming from motor, but it didn't sound like metal on metal.

Threw down the electric for the long, slow trip back to the launch. Didn't try to re-start.

Got home and checked all plugs - started with #2 cylinder due to the coil issue I had at the start of the season - it was fine. Got to #6 and found this:

Is it toast?

Will this result in a rebuild or a whole new powerhead?

How much will this cost?

What did I do to make this happen? I had great water pressure, and no alarm went off at all.

Doesn't look good. Can you see the piston through the spark plug hole? Looks like the strap on the plug is bent all the way to the electrode meaning that there was contact with something, i.e. chunk of piston. If the piston and cylinder is shot, you need to pull the powerhead and split the case to fix it. Do a compression test and try to look at the piston first and check back here.
