I have a 1984 omc stringer 400. Its been a project and I just saw the outdrive ball gear was worn. From what i've read, the wear isn't tooo bad, but the angle could cause further problems. Do you think it will last a while or should it be replaced?

Thanks

Howdy,

No it doesn't look "too worn"

What does the other one look like?

You replace them as a "pair".

So if you're putting another drive on the boat and the "gears" don't have matching "wear", they could wear MUCH quicker.

Oh and Welcome to iBoats!

Thanks for the reply Rick,

The other gear has no wear at all, just has the paint worn off of it. I'm assuming the guy I purchased it from ran it with the drive up, since the tilt is stuck all the way up at the moment.

I was wondering about the difference in wear also. Do you think it will be okay to use in this condition? As long as it doesn't run rough and I keep an eye on the gears?

Thanks again,

Re: Is my ball gear shot?

I think it's common for them to wear unevenly.

The one in your picture has a lot of life left. If the other one has little wear, they're fairly "new"

You can use the search function for more info here too if you like. Also, when you click on a thread, there's "similar threads" at the bottom of the page too.

Here's another thread on the subject.

I would run what you have. I would also "watch" them. (I would even watch "new" gears so I could get a feel for the wear rate......when they go, you're either getting towed back or you're on your "kicker")

Cheers,

Re: Is my ball gear shot?

I think I've read every ball gear thread on the net the past few days. This forum is great though. Thanks for the info Rick. Hopefully it will run well once I get the trim fixed. You've certainly eased my mind about it.
