Is my carb still clogged up?

No sure what is the problem with my motor. It ran fine last two weeks ago. The engine will not start. If I spray fuel in the carb, it will run for about 2 seconds. I rebuilt the carb and it is still not starting up. Fuel does not come out when the drain plug is removed. I think the carb is still clogged up. Could it be the fuel pump? Any help is great appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Is my carb still clogged up?

Hong,

If the bowl is dry, there's a couple of reasons. Most likely reason for the dry bowl is a stuck carb float not allowing fuel into the carb. Leave the bowl drain screw out and pump primer bulb. If no fuel runs from bottom of bowl, float needle is stuck. I'm assuming the primer bulb is working. If fuel does flow from bowl, replace bowl drain screw. Disconnect fuel at carb and put fuel line hose into a tin can. Pull rope starter, you should see fuel being pumped into the can. If no fuel is being pumped into the can , replace or rebuild the fuel pump.

Since you didn't post you Make and Model number of your motor, all we can do is guess. The more specific you are....the more helpful we can be.

what engine is it? If there's a lower high speed needle it can also be removed to see if there's fuel in the carb, but it sounds like you have a newer engine...

I have a 1979 35hp Johnson motor. It only has one adjustment.

Fuel not coming out the drain plug means it is not getting into the carb. That means the float valve is not open or there is a stoppage somewhere ahead of it (filter?)

The fuel pump has nothing to do with starting the motor (unless it is somehow plugged up). You fill the carb with the primer bulb, and then it should start and run awhile till it burns the gas out of the carb, even if you didn't even have a fuel pump.

Thanks all for the help. I got it work now. It turns out that I connected the fuel lines to the fuel pump wrong. Once I swapped the hoses, it filled the carb right up. I missed a day of fishing due to my dumb error. Thanks again for the help.
