I just got a 92 regal with a 7.4 Volvo penta dp. Put it in the water today and let it get to temperature. It went on its first test drive and as I steadily increase throttle it sounded and performed great. Then....lost rpms and speed smelled some smoke like rubber burnt. Shut down engine. White smoke everywhere floor hot. Temp gauge never got over 225 has to be wrong. Got a tow in to dock. Engine room has about 3 quarts of oil in bulge oil on walls and antifreeze on engine cover. What could have happened?

I noticed a rubber burning smell when I ran it on muffs But figured it was a little hydronic fluid on the engine from changing the trim motor. A little white smoke after five minutes but not out the exhaust.

burning rubber is not normal. guessing you have a smoked raw water impeller. 225 is hot for a marine motor. oil on bilge floor and wall is not good. you most likely overheated the engine. you will need to clean everything, check the raw water pump, and hope you didnt damage the engine. I would do a compression check.

You are going to have to do a compression test as suggested, just to get an idea where you stand.
Fix the raw water pump, put some oil in it, fill the cooling system up and start it up and see what you have.
The burned rubber you smelled was probably the exhaust hoses burning from lack of water in the raw water system. Without that water flow, there is nothing to cool anything with, and it will blow antifreeze out of the heat exchanger.
Oil, who knows at this point, maybe an oil hose burned because it was touching the exhaust system, Maybe a hole in a piston. All we can do is guess, you can look at things and troubleshoot it.

Don S is right as usual. I did the same thing about 10 years ago but not quite as badly as it sounds like you did. He right about the impeller and the exhaust hoses. I discharged my fire extinguisher in mine when I saw all the smoke (mine never quit running). I really cant believe you never saw the smoke. One other thing - check all the wiring and hoses that are near the exhaust boots and/or manifold. It was so hot in mine that a couple of wires melted when they touched the manifolds. I had to replace a couple of harnesses. On the bright side, my engine was not harmed and is still running strong.

Well you are right. I checked out the impellar and it was a mess. The oil came from a burned hose on the manifold and I cooked through a power steering line. The oil in the bilge was just a sheen layer and the antifreeze was under it. I hope when I replace everything and top it off that it turns over. If it runs should I do the compression test if I don't here anything?

Definitely do the compression test to ease your mind. It actually would be the first thing I would do

Not much sense starting it if you really poor compression. Might be worth a leak down test as well if the compression is really bad, just to see what and where to narrow down your search on disassembly if needed. Especially if you are inexperienced at visually seeing the problem.

Ok well I plan on doing compression Saturday. I pulled the oil like that had the whole and I'm having it remade.

I found the battery cables coming from the engine where semi melted. Just a little insulation. I was thinking heat shrinking them to do a quick cheap fix. That be ok?

Well I will be doing the compression on Saturday but this morning I had to know it the engine was seized so I went out at 5am to replace the oil line, impeller and top off the lost fluids. The other impeller was completley shredded of all the blades! I fired her up and she STARTED! sounded strong.

But after a couple of minutes she began to over heat again. Mostly from the starboard side, top near the powerstearing area. The temp was reading 200. I shut it down. Also there was some condensation coming from the exhaust boot, but i figure that was from the tempurature and humidity.

My plan, check the cooling lines for obstructions for the blade fragments. If I cant find any obstruction then I dont know where to go from there. I would hate to take this to the mechanic since I kind like learning but....I want to get on the water.

Please help!

Re: Is my engine toast?

Those impeller pieces went somewhere and need to be flushed out or they can cause raw cooling water blockage and still overheat even with new impeller.

Regarding overheating on muffs, what drive is this?

Also, was all this from the first time you had run it?

Re: Is my engine toast?

The drive is a Volvo penta 740a dp ms-5.

I got all the impeller price out and changed the thermostat. It doesn't over heat anymore! I spent the day at te lake finally.

The trim motor is not working now. I prob blew a fuse or cooked a wire. The exhaust rubber connector thing (don't know what they are called) expanded alot and leak while the engine is running so i need to replace them. But that should be easy.

Thank you all for all your help.

Thumbs up! glad you got that overheating issue out of the way :)
