Is My Flywheel Mounted Right?

step one on the FAQ thread says this

"Manual specs are different for each but this is close enough to get them all REAL close. This assumes nothing is broken or "wrong" with it. This also assumes that the timing pointer is properly adjusted (if adjustable) to accurately read TDC of the #1 piston."

well I recently replaced trigger, stator, rectifier and it runs better, but I want it to run right, so I checked the timing and its readings are weird, Im thinking the pointer is off TDC for piston 1. Book says use a dial indicator but I dont have one, so if I where to eyeball it, would the piston 1 have to be all the way toward the spark plug, thats what the term Top Dead Center means?

FYI- timing light reads, 464@ max advanced cold cranking and in between the 9? and 23? (like this second little dot no numbers)@ idle cranking

Re: 70hp Mariner Timing

Right now I set my pointer on 0? and cylinder 2 is @ TDC. If im reading right, cylinder 1 should be TDC @ 0?? what gives? is my flywheel not mounted right and thats why I am getting off the wall readings?

I have a almost the same engine and the crank shaft has a notch on the spline and the flywheel should mate to this only one way. Recheck the fylwheel mounting. It is important that you dont turn the engine counterclock wise as you can damage your impeller. The torque setting for the fylwheel nut for reinstallation is 85 ft/lbs. TDC or zero should be read from the top cylinder or cylinder #1 on your inline 3.

Re: 70hp Mariner Timing

right your flywheel should only go on one way. BUT this no talent mechanic I took it to removed the fly wheel from the center hub, cuz he thought I wanted that part removed to get to the stator off, which I did, but I also had to remove the trigger. Long story short im not sure I put it back on the hub right and it is messing up my time readings.

So should I put cylinder 1 TDC and undo the flywheel from the hub and line up with 0??

Re: Is My Flywheel Mounted Right?

Yes, your flywheel is not installed correctly. If you remove the nut and washer from the center of the flywheel you will see the top of the crankshaft. It is a tapered spline with a section of spline missing. This missing spline is the notch that I am refering to. The flywheel also has this opposing notch and they can only mate one way because of this. I would not try anything else but that. This will ensure that the flywheel timing marks and pointer are correct. The timing pointer only gives you a small adjustment mabe +-6 degrees if I had to guess, and this adjustment is made to compensate for backlash. The manual is correct in explaing the adjustment by getting you to turn the flywheel in such a way as to remove all the backlash inorder to set the timing pointer.

Yah I know that the flywheel HUB only mounts on the splined shaft one way. But it was removed from that hub and I guess I installed it off set from the hub. I thought it might be on right, but I guess its a coincidence that the 2nd cylinder is TDC@0?. Im gonna remove and set correct with 0? with cylinder 1@TDC so I can finally set timing correct.

Ok. I see what your taking about. Good luck getting that right. I would use a dial indicator to find TDC. Make two marks, before and after piston movement and then measure the distance to find center aka TDC.
