I have been working on my cousins 28 horse evinrude. It had a bad (leaking) head gasket. Head bolts stuck. All stuck some- 2 stuck so bad that heads twisted off. All most got head off. (broken shanks wedged against inner bore of holes in head) I noticed that when I looked at the outside of the head area - specificly at where the edge of the gasket stuck out I could see quite a bit of white corrosion above and below the gasket edge. Now I think this may have been from water seeping out of gasket /head/block interface over a long period of time.
My engine is a 35 horse evinrude. It is in running condition (I think) and don't have reason to believe it's head gasket is leaking - BUT - I can see just a little bit (not as much) of the same corrosion as the other motor had.
Here is the question..... Do I take the head off to replace the gasket and risk broken bolts ...... or do I let sleeping dogs lie untill I later verify that I HAVE to change it ????
Does this line of corrosion indicate water leaking ? (even if you don't see any liquid water)
