Is my hub spun?

'79 rude 70, worked fine all morning yesterday, then after moving slowly through some standing timber (which I only hit one tree) I gave it some gas & the engine revved but the boat didn't go. Tried again same thing. Raised the motor to see if there was any visual clue to a problem which there wasn't. After that it worked normally the 6 or 7 miles back to the ramp at WOT. Also powered onto the trailer with no problem. Don't have tach or speedometer so when I say "normal" I mean sounds & feels normal but can't actually measure it.

I won't have it back in the water for a couple weeks so I won't take the time to test it, (or is there an out-of-water test you know of) but before I take it to the shop I'm wondering, does anything else cause that kind of symptom, and does it ever happen once then go back to normal?

thanks,
jtw

If your motor worked okay after that, then I would think that it was immersed in weeds or something to make it cavitate. Take off prop and check for fishing line and stuff wound around the spindle shaft. A spun prop is always a spun prop, and would not recover.

Re: Is my hub spun?

Weeds are very unlikely at the location where I was.

When I got home I noticed a few bits of tree bark stuck in the diffuser ring - maybe something stuck there could have caused ventilation then fell off when I raised the motor?

I think I can rule out a gearcase problem unless it can fall out of gear & back in without makin any noise...

I did find a few strands of fishing line around the shaft, not too bad though.

guess I'll put off the prop shop for a while.

thanks,

i always take a white marker mark the hub and the inside edge of prop hub. make the marks line up. so when you pull out of the waterlook at your marks to see if they line up.if they don't prop is slippin. some props have a replacement hub watch prop shops they are kinda pricey.but they can replace the pressed in hub.

I'm with skeeter, spun hubs don't get better, they get worse. You had a temporary obstruction. Maybe even something stuck on the boat bottom or gearhousing that interrupted the flow of water to the prop. Check it out.
