Got my old 35 Evinrude running :)) but now not sure if impeller is bad. Upon starting initially water was spraying out of the rear port about half up lower unit. There was also the small stream coming out just under the engine cover. Now after running a bit, the small stream has stopped but the mid-level spray continues.
Not sure what that means???

When was the impeller replaced? If you don't know, replace it. Then you know if the impeller is good.

Not sure on your motor, but some only have an active tell-tell, the small stream, if the thermostat is open. Again, I don't know about your motor.

The 1977 does have an overboard indicator (the squirt you saw) It should squirt any time the motor is running regardless of thermostat satus. But the squirt gets plugged up sometimes. The spray out the backside also indicates it is pumping,

Are you running it on a boat, on the lake, or in a bucket?

Thermostat has nothing to do with the tell tale.------If you just bought this motor then a new impeller must be installed.-------A 1977 model usually does not have an overheat warning system.----Motor will overheat ,slow down , owner will add more throttle and motor goes BOOM.
