My boat is a 17' weighing just around 1500 with a 100hp mercury. The boat tops out at about 30 on calm waters. shouldnt the boat be a little faster than that with that size motor?

It depends on how much a load you have. What RPM are you running at WOT?
List all the info RPM/people/coolers,size prop, etc, etc. Jerry

Re: Is my motor Underpowered?

The first thing I should have asked was did you do a compression test.Low comp will affect performance. If the comp is good. That motor should run 54-5500RPM at wot. If the pitch is 17 you might look at a 15pitch to bring the RPM's up and that should increase your speed. Good luck,J
