Is my voltmeter gauge bad??

Have a 1999 Sea Ray Bowrider 210 with Mercrusier 350 I/O and had been noticing that my fairly new battery was not holding charge. Noticed my voltmeter gauge was pegged (16V). Had the alternator tested and it was "on the edge" of going..putting out just shy of 16V (instead of the 14V it should be). Replaced the alternator and voltage testing now reads a perfect 14ish volts at the alternator and battery terminals while idling. Issue is that my voltmeter gauge is still pegged. (note: it drops to zero when the engine is not running). So now I'm thinking that my voltmeter gauge is bad. Any thoughts? Could the bad alternator have killed the voltmeter? Seems odd that the voltmeter would go bad same time the alternator was on it's way out. I still need to test the voltage at the gauge wiring itself to see what I get but wanted to post in the meantime to see if anyone could help me diagnose. Thanks in advance for the help! -Brian.
