Is my water pump dead ? Please help

In Feb I had the local marina do a tune up, check up on my new old motor. I asked them to check the water pump also. They told me it was pumping fine, and to replace it anyway it would be around 300 bucks, and 2 weeks to get the part. I figured I would check things out before putting my boat into the water for the first time, and I put the ear muffs on the motor, turned the hose on full, and started the motor. I let it run for maybe 1-3 min, but no water came out the two holes just below the cowl in the rear. I could feel pressure but no water. I then filled a barrel of water, let it run for 1-3 min more, motor did not really get hot, but no water. When I put my fingers over the holes this time, the exhaust bubbled from the prop. Is there thermostates that open when it gets warm? I'm not sure what to do. A friend told me it should also pee water. 1989 Johnson, 25HP, 2-stroke, long shaft. Please help.

You should have a tell tale on that year outboard.

The 'nipple' will be located on the lower cowl. Attached to it will be a black water line that runs from the water jacket. This is an indicator of water flow. The muffs should force feed the cooling water none the less though. You may have a restriction in the cooling circuit or your nipple and/or water line is blocked. Little critters love building nest in them.

You definately have a tell tale ("pee stream") on the starboard side. If its not pumping you have a problem. You may have a restriction. Could be expensive to have the marina check/clear it for you. Heck, at $300 for an impeller and tune-up I'm sure glad I do my own work.

Thanks again! You've helped me with other questions. It was 250.00 for the tune up, another 300 for the water pump. But at this rate, I think i'll give a shot myself. Should I have an instant tell tale? or does it need to warm up?

I hope you got kissed first. Or at least had an entire water pump housing installed and not just the impeller.

It should "pee" immediately.

I didn't have the water pump or impeller replaced. The Marina told me it would be an extra 300, and several weeks to get the part. They told me it was working fine so why replace it. But now that i've checked it, it's doesn't appear to be working.

If you are compfortable in using tools, replacing a water pump is relatively easy - in fact it is a lot easier than breaking out $300.00. That price is obscene.

The water pump should be replaced no matter who does it. And it is normal for no water to flow out of the two holes that you mention when you run it on the muffs. You will get flow whenin the water at speed.
