No not alike at all....only in name

Marine grade has no voids and will not react with aluminum.

You can buy pressure treated marine grade plywood, but it won't be at your local store.

Contact a boat dealer in your area for where to buy it.

If someone tries to sell you PT for MG, walk away, 'cause they obviously don't know their wood

Yes! It's true!!! They do make and sell pressure treated marine grade plywood!

It is kiln dried and has no voids.

It is treated with the old chromated copper aresenate formula, the only PT wood you can buy today with that formula.

It's what was in my 1998 Tracker (from the factory) when I bought it new!

Dude your tracker had PT in it?

Wait do they make trackers that aren't aluminum?

( How about Talladega man? Did you see 48 and 88 pass over the yellow line? As they explained the new double line before the Daytona race that was clearly a violation and they should have lifted. Great ending either way)

You may be able to find Marine Grade that is also Pressure Treated as jigngrub suggests, but in general, what the others are trying to point out, is that what you most often see sold as Pressure Treated is NOT Marine Grade. Marine Grade is a "quality" of Plywood, and PT is as the name suggests a "treatment". They are different things although I could see some, very rare plywood that could actually be both.

to expand the question--can you use pressure treated instead of marine grade--it would depend on the application, but you want marinre grade for anything that will be exposed constantly to water--including places you can't see. Teh edges are the vulnerable.

It depends on where the plywood is being used. If it's for a structural use such as in a transom you definitely want the real thing (marine plywood) - the voids in lesser grades of plywood are weak points. You also have to consider that marine plywood (unless it's been pressure treated) will rot after a long enough exposure to moisture, so you need to be sure to properly encapsulate it.

As has been said, what are you doing with it? Quite frankly there are a good number of places where A-C or B-C exterior will work as well (or almost as well) as marine ply.

What about for floors and structural areas under the floors? Does marine grade really make a difference since you will be sealing the whole thing with fiberglass and resin everywhere?

I was thinking of replacing some wood backing in my seats and spot repair 2 soft spots in my floor. The only wood at my local store is regular pressure treated plywood, but it wood be ok in these mild applications, is that right?

"the only PT wood you can buy today with that formula."

Actually you can still buy PT lumber as well as plywood with the old formula.
It is billed as "Marine Use" or "Industrial Use".
Generally not carried by the big box stores.
You have to go to a smaller lumber yard, marine supply or specialty lumber store.

the thing about boats is, nothing is sealed, nothing is watertight and nothing is rust proof! if it were, you wouldn't be doing the repairs in the first place. And as was amplified to my comment, exposure to moisture is almost as bad as standing water.

Now, for something like a patch or seat bottom, you have to ask, am I concerned about the strength of this repair 10 years from now? Not all boat repair projects are created equal. Getting a couple more seasons out of the 1975 tri-hull is not restoring a classic for your grandchildren.
