Hi, I've been trying to locate a factory service manual for my 2001 Johnson 70HP 2 stroke and so far have only be able to find a year 2000 service manual. Would this be suitable to use with my 2001?

Thanks

I had, they only show a parts catalog and operator's guide for a 2001.

The year 2001 was a bit of " turmoil " for OMC.-----Sort of the end of the line for OMC.---BRP took it over.-------So a 2000 manual is good as these motors did not change much from year to year.----The decals and paint were the biggest change.----Are you having issues with your 2001 model ?

Thanks, that's kinda what I figured. I mainly want one for routine maintenance I can do on my own and in case I need more in depth troubleshooting before taking to a mechanic if possible. I have had what I think is an intermittent spark issue pop up occasionally. Causing hard starts maybe 3 times total in the 4 years I've had it. So I'd really like to have this manual when/if it arises again.

A number of reasons for hard starting.-----A battery not fully charged or in poor condition is one issue.----Are you pushing the key in WHILE cranking it over ?

Yes I push in the key while starting. It usually starts within a couple seconds, other than these couple times. And once started, no issues, just a bump of the key and it's running. I usually push in the key 3-4 times before cranking with it pushed in. I did try once holding it in for an 8-10 second count like some of the procedures say to do before cranking and that just made it smell flooded after doing that. The last time I was experiencing the issue I pulled the spark plug on the middle cylinder and saw spark , then went to the top and saw none, then to the bottom and it had none, so I went back to the middle to see if it still had spark and it almost fired up on the other 2 cylinders I had just previously seen no spark. I then checked my battery and it said it only had a 67% charge , so I charged it to 100% and then had it tested, which came out good. Meanwhile I cleaned the battery connections also, which looked fine but I made the surfaces shine to rule that out. Only other thing I have done was replace the ignition switch. I had read the switches were a common issue and I wanted a new set of keys anyway since I only had one and it was bent. I figured it was a win win if it happened to cure the spark issue. So far I've had about 3 startups since the battery was charged and connections cleaned and haven't had an issue. But like I said it's only happened maybe 3 times out of probably 40-50 cold startups. So I haven't had a lot of opportunities to troubleshoot it. Everytime it has eventually started, after some frustration of course.

Some will argue here.----Pushing the key in for 10 seconds does nothing.---The electric primer is a valve and it is NOT a pump.----Just push it in while cranking.
