I am re-building my 70 horse outboard and want to make sure I have everything I need ready when the block is back from being bored. My VRO pump was working fine when I took it off, but I would like to replace the hoses on it. Do I have to order the specific hose parts from evinrude or can I use regular auto parts house rubber hose lines. I have read where people say I need alcohol resistant hose, and that steel hose clamps are not the best for the clamps as well. I would like to get my parts where I can go up to a store and they are readily available, but if I need to order the hose and special plastic clamps from Evinrude I guess I can go that route as well. Thanks for the help and I am sorry if this has been covered before. I didn't find exact answers so I posted this. Thanks again.

You would have to try very hard to find hose that's not alcohol resistant. Virtually all automotive fuel hose made in the last 20 years is. The plastic clamps are best (they provide even pressure all the way around), but I would use ss clamps if in a pinch. The only reason to use BRP hose would be if there is a special short, molded one or to get the proper ID. Otherwise automotive hose is fine.

Thanks for the help. I will make sure the molded hoses are still good and then whatever straight runs I have use new hose from the auto parts. As for the clamps I still have some of the plastic omc kind so I will use those on the hard to reach area and the ss clamps elsewhere. Jsut till I can get some more clamps in. And as always this place is awesome with help. Thanks.

I always hate to be the buzz kill but the use of automotive parts, hose etc. is not allowed in marine applications. If an accident happens due to unapproved parts and an insurance adjuster knows their job you would lose your claim and be held liable for damages.
I have worked with many adjusters that are just looking for a reason to deny a claim for just this reason.
Buy marine approved parts and your life may be much nicer and safer!
