I always thought Zinc chromate was Zinc Chromate and it did the same thing for corrosion protection. If I can remember right I think yrs ago it was yellow also.

The marine Green Zink Chromate, to my knowledge, is manufactured specificly to protect aluminum from corrosion and to provide a proper (no peeling) area for the surface paint coat.

The aircraft Yellow Zink Chromate, I have no knowledge of excepting that boats don't fly. It would be interesting to know what the write up is about it.

Why not use self etching primer? Better option, as it is not toxic. Youll have to wear the PPE from your pic to put that ZC on.

Well after doing a bit of research on the web. It apears there is no diference in the yellow to the green. Just pigment was added to get the colour they wanted. Just a possible UV stabilization possibly. Seeinbg I plan on painting it afterwards. Don't need the green for my application.

Here is a link to the a good website for info on the history of Zinc Chromate.

The zinc acts as a sacrifical anode and the chromate reacts with the aluminium forming a tough skin over the surface of the aluminum.

Etch primer buys you no such protection.

Re: Is there a difference?

Oh yes after having used this product "Tempo Yellow Aviation Zinc Chromate Primer" I want to note that it is not a high build primer. It is very very thin primer. More like a coating then a building primer. Might want to try something else if you are looking for high build properties. I do not know what that would be though.

I did try to build it and it did but took a ton of the product and did not sand nicely.

Maybe someone will step in here.

It is an adhesion primer not a filing primer, I have always been told that it has an acid in it that actually eats into the metal a bit to give you adhesion, you would need to use the etching first then a high build primer after that.

It is really nasty stuff, never did like spraying it, worked at a sign shop years ago and made alot of aluminum signs and had to spray that.
