Hi,
I am a "boating novice"...so would appreciate any guidance on my question.

I have a 1973 Evinrude 85 HP motor (Model: 85393M) that runs well, and I believe has decent compression on all cylinders. It does have a cowling cover which I repainted...but do not believe it was the original cover.

I have purchased "another" used boat...so now have one extra motor that I need to move. What are my best options to dispose of this motor? Is there a market for used motors like this, and if so, what would be a fair price to receive? (I have searched eBay...but have not found any similar boat motors.

Thanks for any advice.

A more accurate indicator is what they are going for in your local Craigslist.

For example, a couple of parts motors in my area are selling from $150-$300, but I'd expect your motor, being in good running condition, should be worth in the range of at least $600-$750.

I also see a 1970 85hp hydroelectric Johnson for sale in good condition for $650; yours had a manual shift which would be more desirable than the hydroelectric L/U.

The economy of the area you're in is gonna be the largest factor in determining selling price. You can always ask more and come down!

HTH & G'luck with the sale.............ed

IMO, posting pix w Evinrude logos on a formely Johnson logo'd outboard would make buyers wonder what's up? It would me, esp if it isnt running when I came to see it. I'm not checking the model # to confirm it is an Evinrude, so perhaps the previous owner put the wrong ones on it. But don't include the Johnson before pix in your ad.

That motor in my local area may or may not be priced accurately or similarly compared to yours.

Please be mindful of the Iboats forum No For Sale posts in the open forum.

Yea I think Ed is on the ball. Here in VA I would expect to see that motor sell for $6-700 (without the CMC trim unit). Also, those CMC power trim units sell for $600 brand new, and I think even more with the trim guage. If your new boat/motor doesnt have powertrim Id definitely keep it.

I have a 1980 85 HP Evinrude that has tilt and trim and is very clean and runs out great for sale for $1200, It has not sold and I only got 1 offer for it in about 2 months, the offer was $750. I refused I figure it should at least bring $900.. at some point in the future. I am in no hurry
