Is there a "more flexible" gas fill hose alternative?

I'm think of moving my gas fill location for my permanantly installed gas tank. When I removed the tank the fill hose (1-1/2" I think) it was VERY stiff. If I had to replace it with the same stuff I'm not so sure I would be able to move my filler neck. Is there a more flexible type of hose that can be purchased to use here?

It should be replaced with the same type of hose. Yes it's difficult to work with because it's got a spiral wire imbedded in the rubber.
I'm guessing that the fill has a barbed connection? They can be especially frustrating.
I've found that chamfering the inside of the hose and applying a little lubricant to both surfaces makes it easier to get on.

Im hoping this isn't the final answer. ANYONE?

FunInDuhSun,
Thanks for your reply. No, it's a fairly smooth slip-on connection at the filler neck. Not sure about the tank.

Im pretty sure it is, thats because that hose is designed to meet uscg regulations for a gas fill on a boat...

Hello Star..

USE only certified fuel hose.

However there are different fill fittings ( 45,90 etc. ) that may help in the new installation.

I just had this same problem. My fill hose went from the center of the boat to the side and then back to the rear. And no it would not bend easily. Since my filler neck that came off the tank pointed to the side I had to find a way to point it straight back. This is what I did. I have an aluminium tank so I did not want to chance using any other kind of metal. I could not find any plastic fittings for fuel hose that big( or metal for that matter). I found a place called Global Technologies on the internet. They had 1.5 in. 14 gage aluminium tube manderal bent to 90 deg with a 2.5 in center line radius. here is a picture of what I did . The filler hose used to run over to the right then back to the rear.

Depending on just how much more you need to bend it the new original hose might work for you. When I removed mine it was hard as a rock and would NOT bend at all, do to age I supose. The new piece that I bought was a lot more flexable than the piece that came out however it was the exact same type and brand hose.

Go to a store that sells it ( I went to a Semi truck store) and take a look at a new piece and see if it will do what you want.

Thank you all for the great responses. I knew I couldn't be the only one that's ever had this problem. I wondered if my filler hose had just hardened over time (my boat's an '83 Starcraft SS180) and it apparently has. I'll buy some new hose first, then try some angled fittings if I have troubles. Thanks again!

Boy thats a beach of a job, luckily my deck was off at the time, it helps to use 2 epople pushing and pulling to get it in position.
Strip 1 inch of the stainless wire from the rubber at both ends and bend it inside the hose ID, it has to ground the tank AND the filler neck.
Don't use auto hose, Coast Guard marine ABYC rated hose is different.

At over $5 a foot it can get expensive if you take the scenic route .

Re: Is there a "more flexible" gas fill hose alternative?

Just came across this today:

http://www.tridentmarine.com/stage/fuel.htm

Top of the page - Corrugated for tighter bend radii and USCG approved. I'm sure that the payment portion of the transaction will be "unpleasant" to say the least.

Good luck!

Might want to source that hose at a Marina that deal with this kind of stuff so you don't have to buy bulk

I know this is an old post but I have the same problem. I was wondering how you chamfer the inside of the hose??? If I can do this it should work for me. Thanks!!!
