Ok,<br /><br />I finally acquired a large capacity toilet tank for the house. The tank on this baby is huge! <br />Like the good 'ol crappers you use to see in your Grandparent's homes!<br /><br />This tank does NOT have the bolt holes through its bottom like today's normal ones do.<br />It does however, have holes at the top of the tank on its back. I assume these are to secure the tank to the wall.<br /><br />QUESTION:<br /><br />Do you think this tank will fit my standard Kohler bowl? <br />Obviously I won't be using the bolts at the bottom of the tank, but what about the outlet?<br />Does anyone know if the outlets are the same size? (It is approx. 2 1/4" od)<br />If they are, shouldn't I be able to toss some new seals in, and drop it on my existing bowl?<br /><br />Then theres the matter of bowl capacity. Will the larger tank work with the 1.6 gallon bowl?<br /><br />Thought I would ask before I start tearing things apart. <br /><br />I suppose I could maybe find a tank at the hardware store and measure it. not sure on the size, measuring a bowl at home depot is a good idea. i'd be afraid of how the tank and bowl seat together. although you only tighten the nuts slightly against the porcelain, it still provides a sealing effect. i'd worry about leakage. what do you need a large capacity tank for? want to pay for more water, or just enjoying some large dinners?

Lol Matt...<br /><br />I have the infamous: 'brother that craps tree trunks'...For one.<br /><br />For two:<br /><br />My back bathroom is a long ways from the septic tank. I'm guessing the flow slows down somewhere along the line and runs out of water and/or steam before it reaches the septic.<br /><br />I have my own well, so the extra water is no biggie.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />H.

If the hole in the large tank matches the hole in the smaller tank, I would drill holes for the bolts using the smaller tank as a template, and mount the larger tank. Seal thedrilled holes with marine sealant before mounting and adding water. If I understand correctly, the difference between the old toilets and the new ones is the tank capacity, not the bowl. If you can retrofit the larger tank, that would be nice. Imagine clearing the bowl with one flush everytime

Watched a show once where they toured a throne factory fond it very interesting. It is my guess that the added capacity will not improve your flush. The reason for this is the flush is actually created by suction of the initial waterflow not the force of the water behind it. In otherwards the good flush actually comes from the design of the plumbing in the bowl not the resivior. However your theory on line flush seems to carry some crediability.<br /><br />Wish I could expound on this but that is kinda the conclusion I drew from watching the manufacturing test in the design stage. Hopefully someone will be able to better explain this.

I see where you are going Neumanns...<br />I understand what you mean.<br /><br />My toilet never had a problem flushing. It will usually take everything down first shot.<br />The problem is, the distance from the bathroom to the septic is a LONG ways, and at some point is slows down. It has to be running out of water to carry things to the septic.<br /><br />The only thing I can figure is to put a larger tank on the bowl, or re-fit my sewer lines...<br /><br />NOT!<br /><br />Hoepfully 'volume' will help out in this case.<br /><br />I read that you need a 'core' diamond drill to go through porcelain. Has anyone ever did this? <br />Should I even bother to drill the bottom of the tank to fit my newer Kohler bowl?<br />The outlets are the same size (2 1/4"). I was just going to bolt it to the wall with the holes provided in the tank at its top.<br /><br />H.

For drilling in porcelain, start the hole with a dremmel tool with a grinding bit to get through the glaze, this will keep the bit from wandering all over the place when you start the hole. Then use a very sharp bit to finish the hole. Don't apply pressure to the bit, let it do the work. I would use low speed so as not to over heat the work area and crack the surrounding porcelain.<br /><br />Please, keep us informed on how this project turns out.

Avoid the drilling and bolt it to the wall. My understanding is the bolts are there to keep it place, not make the seal - the weight of hte tank will do that.<br /><br />Boy, this thread has gone down the crapper fast!

Good luck Homerr. The bowl you have sounds like the one in my upstaris from 1917. The hole in the bottom of the tank has a "L" shaped piece of pipe coming out of it which went into the back of the bowl. I hope you can get it to bolt to your Kohler. <br /><br />My toilet has the power to flush a dachshund. It also sits a little higher than normal. I love it. Heck and that is just flushing half the tank. I have never and will never have to plunge this toilet. I don't even keep a plunger up there.

dang yall got me curious of ole fashioned plumber ingenuity... is there really that much diff in the ole toilets from nowadays? <br /><br />i gotta guest toilet in the hallway, which is a 'concern' of mine when the flock of nieces come over. i was actually considering replumbing the elevation of that pvc drain since my basement isn't finished. but now yall got me wondering if i should just go 'vintage' with the actual appliance instead <br /><br />i've done- thank you- yes i'm thoughtful man- got over the temp toilet paper volume-enforcement rules. and i was trying to play nice again by putting more than a 1/2 roll in there again...

Well Ebb...<br /><br />There ain't nothing like a flush that will take the Titanic down.<br /><br />If you don't have to pay for water and you're not concerned with using more water, I'd definately go with an older an larger tank.<br /><br />~Just keep small children and pets away when you activate that sucker~<br /><br /> <br /><br />H.

It's done!<br /><br />The old tank fit right on my 1.6 gal Kohler.<br />I had to bolt the tank to the wall.<br /><br />I had to find a taller fill valve, and add an extension to the overfill tube, but it works great. SWOOOOSH!<br />The big tank has 3 to 4 times the capacity.<br />I migh have to borrow Married With Children's, (Al's) nickname: "The Furgeson"<br /><br />LOL!<br /><br />The next time the cat tries to take a drink...<br /><br />Heheheh !!<br /><br />Thanks everyone for your help.<br /><br />H.

Neuman,<br /><br />I actually found a few old tanks on EBay.<br />They also sell (new) larger capacity toilets out of Canada. Thre's a guy (A dealer I think) that sells them on EBay.<br /><br />That would have been my last resort if I couldn't find a tank to fit.<br /><br />H.
