Mechanically Inept,

There are NO elite members here. Everyone is welcome as long as they keep it clean and provide as much info. as possible. It would help if you gave a model and serial number. These can be found on the mounting bracket of your engine.

I would have answered your question if I had a clue as to why your engine is doing what it does.

Give it some time, this is a holiday weekend. :)

Hi Mechanicly inept.
Ditto what djohns said. Any reply that I could give you with out model and ser.# would just be a shot in the dark. Once we know what you have, then maybe we can tell you how to fix it.

Re: is there a reason why noone will answer my post????

I usually like to just read all the comments but I'll give it a shot as I don't know model/year. I've worked on Mercs since '76 and don't remember if Merc even made an 18 hp. I am getting old, so it may be just my memory. When you say an "old Mercury" I'll assume it is pre-60's and your question is pretty generic anyway, so here goes...... When you lift your outboard, some gas will probably spill out through either a worn needle valve or through the atmospheric vent. As with anything old, and due to multiple varied situations, we all start differently, some will need priming...some won't. Some you need to raise the warm up lever, some you don't. Some will leak more gas than others, etc. etc. There are hundred other adjustments and checks that could be made to remedy your situation. All of which will cost you money and only change the start up conditions. Find the procedures that you will need to follow in varying situations and live with it, as I see it you don't really have a problem.

by the way, after putting the motor down, try half throttle and a little choke to start.

I ran three quick searches cant find your posts.
Post again Ill give it a try.
Usually no answers indicates no one has any input to help.

Howdy, MI.

I went looking and found one of your posts. It had two replies in an hour.

Though I find no problem other than insufficient information, you might check out my post on how to get engine help. The other posts might have been confusing.

Keep in mind that we aren't a paid staff sitting around waiting to leap to your aid. We are ordinary boaters like you who have enough experience to be able to help and who are willing to help if we can. If we can't we usually ask you questions or simply move on to a problem we recognise.

Good luck on your starting problem. :)

Inept
Your last post got two responces right away and I think is a good answer. If you want more responces you might try thanking the guys who did take the time to respond. It does two things, it tell's them you came back and read there help info and it also moves your thread back to the top.

You guys all have class! Instead of ripping this guy apart for being impatient you all still tried to help him out. Thanks. :) I can't wait until we decide to get the top 25 or so contributors together for the first annual iboats regala. (Don't hold your collective breath because it might still be years away - but it is fun to dream!)

The easy way to find a recent post is to click on
posters profile, the click on view recent posts in top right corner. I always have trouble with the search.

Mech Inept: you're ugly and your mother told us to ignore you... :p

OK, seriously, the advise given above is pretty good, as were the answers to your post.
Keep in mind that most people on these forums fall into two catagories: 1) those of us who are peeking while we're at work; and, 2) those who are at home after a day of work and will log on when they feel like it. In both cases, some of the answers may come from 3 to 10 time zones away (I love hearing from NZ and Australia). You can boost your post back to the top by answering it yourself with ^ ; everyone knows what that means. So be patient! AND DON'T SHOUT!!! :D
