Is there a wind or water powered battery charger?

I have an old battery start motor (1967 Evinrude V4 60 HP)that lacks a generator and it's more trouble than it's worth to fit one, assuming I could find the parts which I probably can't.

Solar panels are an option but don't put out a lot of charge compared with the possible drain on a heavy stop - start day so that the battery isn't kept at full charge. There's also the problem of the deck space taken up on a smallish boat by something that can't be walked on.

I got to thinking of the old bicycle dynamos and modern wind generators and wonder if there is a suitable boat item based on the same principle to charge batteries, either wind powered with a prop mounted above water or water powered with a prop mounted below water?

Sure, sailboats have wind powered generators. Open ocean cruisers use them all the time. You got a mast? Didn't think so.

Thom

There are hand and foot crank chargers that will do the job. If you have the time.

Maybe reading an old sailing mag, I remember reading about a generator that was trailed behind boat on a cable. Never saw one for sale.
Seems like somebody who likes to tinker, might be able to devise something run off a paddle wheel, prop or turbine mounted on the transom.
Don't forget to show photos. :)

How much space you got under that hood?

Bolt a simple pulley to the flywheel, get yourself a small alternator, a belt, and fabricate a hanger.

Or else just go the easy route, and get another battery!

I have plans for a home made wind generator (from a Canadian mag) if anyone is interested. You have to make everything yourself though, if you do not know how an electric motor and an electric generator work... Forget about it ;)
