I have a 2.5L that has water in the oil and the previous owner told me that oil was praying out of the engine near the manifold. After he noticed this he brought the boat to idle and ran several more minutes to get back to the ramp. He says the motor ran fine. (I bought the boat knowing this -- and the fact that the engine was probably toast was factored into the price.) Before replacing the engine, I thought I would dig in a little bit to verify the block was cracked.
Tonight I removed the manifold and found that two of the six nuts were little more than hand tight near cylinders 3 and 4 -- one of the two studs actually broke while I was unscrewing the nut -- with very little force. Suspect person who installed sensed it about to break and stopped short.
Also, found rust in #4's exhaust port on the manifold and some rust in #3's intake port on the head (photos attached).
The block was also welded just behind the manifold -- there is about a 2 to 3 inch weld.
I have removed the plugs and didn't see any rust or evidence of water in any of the cylinders. (the engine starts right right up and idles fine on muffs).
Is there any hope that the water in the oil is coming from a bad manifold? I'll be doing a compression test and digging into the head over the next few days.

Thanks,
Dan
