Is there such a part???

The fuel pump on my 1966 9.5 Johnson is the type that is mounted directly to the block. I suspect the pump may be weak and I'd like to experiment with a Mikuni snowmobile pump to see if it would work. My question is whether or not a plate with nipple to attach a pulse hose exists? The part I'm imagining would bolt to the block where the fuel pump mounts and effectively convert the pulse port from female to male. Am I dreaming? Are there any alternatives?

Re: Is there such a part???

First off, when you think the pump is weak (motor starving for fuel/empty carb bowl), can you pump the bulb to restore fuel to the carb bowl to keep running? If yes, then you likely have a faulty fuel pump. If no, you probably have a problem elsewhere.

I don't think there is any male pulse port on your motor.. you'd have to fabricate something to use the mikuni.

Good luck!

There is neither female nor male on that end. It is just flat surfaces with a gasket.
Although I can't really understand why you want to get a different brand fuel pump you can in theory tap a thread into the pulse hole and screw a piece of pipe in there which would get you your male end. Personally I would just service the pump.

I completely agree with servicing the original pump but as far as I know you can't get a rebuild kit for it and a new pump here in Canada is over $100.00. I dont have a preference to the Mikuni, I just happen to have one and if I can somehow feed the pulse into it I think it just might do the job and save me over a hundred bucks too.

What you need is :"Sierra fuel pump rebuild kit 18-7823" available on this website for US $ 10.99 +shipping.
It has the diaphragm which is what you probably need to fix your pump.
Just give them a call to confirm that it has the diaphragm.
If you do not have a manual, make very sure that you put everything in the way it came out,so the check valves will work in the right direction.
whenever I take a fuel pump apart I do it on a large white piece of cloth so I won't loose any of those pesky small springs and balls.

by the way,
Is there some back road or other to get away from that terrible traffic between Toronto and Barrie?
Every time I have to go up to Parry Sound in summer I get stuck in these terrible traffic jams on the way to Barrie.

A Sierra 18-7350 for 50 bucks will do the trick.

Are you sure it will fit? I only ask because the OE part number for my motor is 382224 and that part number isn't included in the list of OE part numbers that Sierra 18-7350 replaces.

You must be travelling up the 400 on a Friday night or Saturday morning?? These times during the summer are brutal due to cottage traffic. I feel your pain since I take this route to work every day. Sometimes we cut over to Weston Road (just to the West of 400) which ends at hwy 9, you then jog west about a mile or so to Rupke road which turns into side road 5 and goes all the way to Barrie.
What lake are you on in Parry Sound?

OMC does sell a rebuild kit for your fuel pump, pretty easy to rebuild.

Re: Is there such a part???

After checking, I find that I made that info up out of thin air. I have a 1967 9.5, which has the newer little pump. So I was wrong. Haven't been wrong since 1987.... dang.....

Wrong twice, my pump must have been replaced at some point, since the drawings are showing the big old critter on the 1967. So I have no idea when the pump was updated, and I will sit down now, thank you.

Im on Sparrow Lake just south of Gravenhurst. We come from Hamilton, so have to deal with that route every weekend.

On the times we know it will be busy, we take highway 27 up to Barrie. It runs parallel with the 400. There are a few stop lights and little towns, but at least you are moving and getting some scenery other than the bumper of the car in front of you!
