Is there such thing as a Prop Cross Ref Guide?

I am looking into getting a new Prop, and hopefully a SS one. I've read tons of posts regarding this topic and wondering if there is some sort of cross reference guide.

I currently have a 3.0L LX Mercruiser with a 17 pitch (48-832828 C1 17) alluminum on a 17 1/2' Crestliner, and wondering since merc makes serveral SS prop models if there is one that could be interchangeable with my current one.

With my current prop it runs about 40mph at about 4800 to 4900 rpms currently. Any suggestions on a SS prop, diameter & pitch that i would see improvements with?

Your suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

Man, find you a dealer that will loan you a prop to test. that is the only way you will know for sure what the new combo will do and if it is the right choice for your rig.

Anything else is pure $$$$$$ speculation; sad but true. Just too many variables to put in a chart.

Merc has a "Prop Selector" on their web site. Input your information there and it may aid you in your decision.

They also have lots of info on all the props they offer.

I will add that your speed seems a little low.

Good luck!

Thanks Texasmark & Crownie2. Yeah, i thought about getting a loaner from a local dealer, but didn't necesarily want to be tied into purchasing it from them as there are better deals on the net. However it is probably the right thing to do!

Crownie2, you had suggested that my speed seems a little slow. What speed would you speculate that i should be at with my size engine?

Thanks again for the input!

And that is one reason the prices are higher at the dealers. Yes there are better deals on the net but "there ainy no test drivin em first" however you may get lucky.

Did you try the calculator? I don't really know your year, weight or drive ratio, but the calculator seems to be suggesting something in the high 40's.

Again, I made some (possibly inaccurate) assumptions regarding your boat to get that result.

You're correct...most dealers (not all though) are higher. I took the good suggestion to get a loaner and try one and approached 3 different dealers in my area...and they declined! At two dealers i even offered to BUY it first to try it and then return OR EXCHANGE it for another to make sure i was getting the right one for my boat/engine...and was declined. They told me that with props, it's a once you buy it basically yours.

I am usually loyal to those dealers or stores that provide excellent products and services, however if they do not i am just like every other average consumer and will find similar or like products and services at a lower price.

I wish i had a dealer in my area that provided loaners and that extra little service like was suggested and i would not have to shop around.

I guess that's why i originally posed the question. I was hoping to get responses from those of you who are way more knowledgable than I because i wanted to be better informed to make decisions for myself and not have to depend on local dealers who are not providing me the service i would like.

Thanks again for the input and suggestions. I appreciate it very much!

Mark at propmd.con has a prop exchange program. He's good about responding to email question on prop performance and exchanges.
