Is this a 1956 Fastwin or Aquasonic?

This is my motor. Seller says it's a 1956 15hp, but I'm not sure of the Model. I didn't see anything on the motor denoting the Model(maybe I missed it). Someone repainted it so I can't tell what it is.

I wouldn't know an Aquasonic if it ran over me in the creek, but I have a '56 Fastwin, and that picture, my freind is it.

You definitely have a Fastwin. You're lucky (versus an Aquasonic). It's a fantastic motor;probably one of the best built. Good luck with it.

Seems to run well. I've run it 3 times on the water and it pretty much starts on first or second pull. Of course, the recoil rope is almost worn through, so I'm going to try and replace it tonight.
Got it to 19.5mph today (10ft Quicksilver inflatable w/ approx 375 lbs of people and gear) so it seems like the motor is pretty strong.

Just replaced the recoil rope in about 10 minutes :D

What is this rubber thing called? Is it supposed to rest in the recoil hole or where the two halves of the cowling meet? Is it something I can find at a small engine shop or am I going to have to order it online?

The rear half of your lower shroud is missing and so is the lower rubber seal for it.

I need the front screw for the cowling (part# 203300). Anyone know the size? Can I get it at Home Depot or Lowe's etc? Different part numbers for the front and back cowling screws....are they just diff lengths or diff thread also?

They are basic fillister head screws, 1/4-20 thread. Get them in stainless if you can.

As for the rubber bit - that's a broken off piece of the pull handle. They split at that rib, leaving you with that piece along for the ride on the pull cord. If it were me, I'd slit it and remove it from the cord. At some point, find an intact grip... The correct one will have a stylized E on it, sorta like the emblem on the side of the cowling.

Another thing I notice is you have a hand starter from a Johnson and it has a different pull rope handle set up than the Evinrude does. On the Evinrude pull rope, you have a little brass tube that fits in a groove where the clamshells meet. You will see item number 17 in the attachment below.

Gentlemen, let me tell you about the word "Aquasonic". It was a word dreamed up by the Evinrude Sales department when the 1954 models came out :D. In 1954 rubber seals were addeed to the outer shells and a carb silencer was added, this reduced the engine noise and made the engines quieter. Hence the new word "Aquasonic", they used this word for the next few years.
