I need to replace my 5.7 in a 1994 Blue Water. I have found this motor on CL but the paint job makes me question if this is indeed a Chevy vs OMC. Can anyone help identify it from the picture? I am playing phone tag with the seller so have questions I still need to ask him. Thought I'd ask for help here in the meantime. Thanks.

An engine can be painted any color you want. He says it's a chevy and it certainly looks like one so I would think it is. To my knowledge OMC didn't make their own engines like that. They got them from GM and Ford. If it was truely rebuilt for marine use it should have brass freeze/core plugs and a marine camshaft.

Yes it's a Chevy, and it's an old one. So I hope you need a block with a 2 piece rear main. Also, those log style GLM exhaust manifolds are junk. And the engine isn't going to be a powerhouse. It's going to have a flat tappet valvetrain in it. Smogger heads! Might be making 230 horsepower. I'd be nervous about the "performance" cam in it! Ever hear of water reversion? Look it up! If the seller doesn't understand what makes it "marine", I would be suspect of the build. Ask to see all of the receipts before you buy, and confirm the machine shop work and/or parts replaced. Due diligence my friend!

Thanks for the feedback. I will need a one piece rear main based on what I have found out about my engine. Iam trying to decide whether to find just a block and rebuild it myself or try to find a long block and go from there. This one does not look like the answer after reading your thoughts. Thanks.

Ayuh,.... Buy a rebuilt long block, 'n install it yerself...

Actually buildin' a motor, is long past most Diy'ers abilities,...
Especially in the Reliability dept...

'ell,... I pay other guys to build mine up, atleast to the short block...

Who rebuilt this motor? Like Seville said if the guy selling it did the work but doesn't know the difference between auto and marine then that a huge reason to avoid this unit.

Check Auto Zone. I got a rebuilt long block for $1600 and has a 5 year warranty. Just make sure the stock number has MS for marine service after it. The clerk probably doesn't know the difference. Mine was a 5.7 with 260 HP. Runs great.
