Is this a Cobra/SX drive?

I had to buy some engine components for my boat and the seller would not split his parts so I had to buy the entire package. He stated that the boat is a 97 but based on his Exhaust riser, the engine seems from a much older year. My boat was mainly used in salt by the previous owner. The boat this came off of is a fresh water only boat. I'm thinking maybe I should drop this into my boat since it's probably in better condition from using in fresh water. Any suggestions?

BTW: the boat currently have the same looking drive but I showed someone a photo of it and he said it's not the SX which is supposed to be the better OMC. I'm hoping he's wrong that's why I'm consulting with you guys.

So I guess I still have the so called problematic OMC drive. Here's the on my boat now.

Re: Is this a Cobra/SX drive?

take the back cover off the upper half of the drive (three 3/8" bolts)

take a photo of what is inside and post

then we will know for sure what you have

btw...the older cobras (clutch dog) are not necessarily problematic, they just weren't produced for very long and parts can be tough to find and expensive

The boat is in a shop an hour away, next time I'm there I'll have some photos taken.

The previous owner gave me a box of some parts he bought and they're all labeled Volvo, would that be a good give away?

Re: Is this a Cobra/SX drive?

being the boat is a '95?? most likely you have the volvo sx drive

as far as what you bought?? take off the cover and post pix of that too

it will be very obvious when you compare the two

That IS the SX drive, not a dog clutch Cobra.

There is no raw water pump under that plastic cover on the outdrive.

Re: Is this a Cobra/SX drive?

the lower gear case extends further forward and the pickups are molded into the case - volvo sx

now that i look closer, the first drive is an older cobra - the middle lube plug is a dead giveaway

the two pix you have are NOT the same drive

Because I'm a Volvo certified tech and have worked on them since they came out in 94. ;)

The hump on the top cover is the biggest give away. Compare your pictures in this thread.

Re: Is this a Cobra/SX drive?

LOL looks like I'll have a Cobra drive for sale real soon.

Now that we've confirmed that these are not 97" drives and the engine is most likely from an older engine. Are the distributors, intake manifolds and carbs interchangeable with the newer 95" 350 engines?

I pretty much had to buy all of those since I wanted to do a ford 302 to chevy 350 conversion.

another thing, so when I go look up parts and manual, do I use Volvo SX as reference or is there another that I use? Are the technically identical or just certain parts?

hmmm...

your wording is a little confusing

in your BOAT, right now is a ford 302 with the sx cobra (volvo) drive??

you purchased an older style omc cobra (clutch dog) drive??

you want to convert to a chevy 350 engine with the sx cobra (volvo) drive??

Re: Is this a Cobra/SX drive?

LOL trust me, I'm confused too. To make a confusing story short, we purchased this boat last month, was then told we need a new engine, current engine is a ford 302, was recommended a 350 since parts are readily available and in the long rain it'll be cheaper to maintain. So we went on a shopping spree for the 350 bolt on. During our venture, we ran into a deal with a lot of the 350 parts but the owner would not split his parts therefore we also have this Cobra drive. The seller told us it came out of a 97 boat so I thought hmm, it must be an SX drive like mine (which you guys has proven me wrong).

So now, I have the Cobra Drive in the first photo along with a bunch of parts which are listed here in my other thread.

This paste month has been crazy for me and this motor. I don't have a lot of money to put into a motor so I'm doing it the hard way by buying bits and pieces as I find them to put together a new engine.

You need to stop buying things until you are sure of what you are looking at and what you need.
Between the two posts, I have no idea what you are doing anymore, or what you have, what will or won't fit, or if any of it will work together.

Re: Is this a Cobra/SX drive?

none of the ford parts are going to work on the 350 chevy engine

as far as the transom assemblies go, i don't know if the older cobra transom plates and the volvo transom plates are the same

you may want to do a search on iboats for: omc cobra conversion to volvo sx - or something along those lines

there may be some input from other members in previous threads that will help

Re: Is this a Cobra/SX drive?

This is my first ever repower and especially we've never been in the water with this boat so we're anxious to get it fix. LOL

What I'm going to do now is bring my pile of parts to the shop and have the long block dropped off. I'm gonna have the mechanic start putting things together and have him tell me what I need to go buy. These mechanic's job isn't to save us money so he's just going to go buy parts out of the book. 100% of these parts can be found online or in the used market.

He quoted me $5k drop in a used/rebuild that's sitting around his shop which I wasn't comfortable with cause who knows what's going on inside of those engines. I don't want to regret it 50 miles offshore. At least going my route, I can control what's going in of my engine especially knowing that I have a genuinely rebuild long block. $5k for a used engine is out of his mind. If I just wanted used, they're all over the place for sub $2k
