Seems to be a personal preference. I have four screaming kids running around my house, so when I get to the river, the quiter the better.

I run through hull exhaust without mufflers on my ’67, 16’ Correct Craft with a high performance Buick V6. It sounds great, makes the engine breath better (I run it at 5500 WOT). It’s kind of useless to have a high-rise manifold, 4 BBL, high performance cam then choke down the exhaust and not let it breath. Conversation is possible if you are not running hard but it’s the same way with my 135 Evinrude but not quite as bad. Don’t forget you have the wind and water noise to contend with too, did you ever try to carry on a conversation in a convertible at 70 MPH? There’s always a trade off. Take your time and talk out the pro’s and con’s, whatever you do make sure you don’t give your wife the chance to say “ I told you so” d:)

Re: Is this a novelty that will wear off.

auty,

I repowered my boat (outboard) and replaced it with a 4 stroke. One of the main factors in selecting the motor was noise. The type of boating I do is sometimes just cruising the flats at slow speed, other times trying to get somewhere with passengers abord that want to have a conversation.

Like all have said, you have decide what type of boating you are going to do and how comfortable you will be with power and noise and the tradeoffs that come with it.

Me personally, I like the quiet smooth ride.

Peace.

Ed.

Thats the type of boats those are,,, loud and impressive. What kind of boating are you looking to do? If you're looking for speed, those are the boats you want. You have to live with your wife,,, not me. LOL

Regardless of whether you like it or not, will everyone else around you like it? Around here just one or two of those macho boats can ruin an otherwise peaceful scene on a lake or river. You would be heard for miles is that cool?? Not to me, not at all.

I figure if you got a big enough Johnson you don't need one of those fancy smancy show off boats!

I doubt that adding mufflers to an unmuffled boat will cause too much of a performance degradation, especially if you are not really racing it. At most a minor carb re-jetting might be needed.

I can tell you I love the sound of the straight pipes, but if I owned the boat, there would be mufflers on there pronto! Not only for my own hearing protection and to avoid annoying the passengers and other boaters, but continous loud noises are tiring.

Plus, fast quiet boats are more fun and impressive to drive that fast loud ones.

Its up to you and what you want. If you want speed you dont have to have a loud V8 my 150 merc outboard will put them to shame. But on the other hand I do love the sound of a 350 chevy with open exhaust. And you should think of your wife, if you want her to go out on the boat with you that is. LOL

Yes, the noise gets old. Its fun for about 10 minutes, then thats it. There is NO performance change regardless. Maybe if you are running a 1000 hp. I had one, and I hated it at night, pulling into a quiet marina. I would still buy one, but it would have to have diverters.

loud boats really tick me off.

I go to the lake to enjoy it, not hear their boats.

Wow! I didn’t know loud boats ticked so many people off, I’ll have to make more WOT passes at 3AM by the marina :p Just kidding. There's a saddle for every horse and an as% for every saddle. That’s why I have different boats, each one has a purpose, skiing, fishing, cruising. You can use any boat to do all three but when a boat was built for a special purpose it won’t do the other tasks as well. You have to decide what you would like to do most in your boat so the boat will suit your needs best.

If I am not mistaken, open pipes are illegal on some lakes.

You will barley be able to converse with the engine running, not at all with it running at speed. these boats, like loud cars, were made for speed and turned heads, not discussions about fine wines.

personally, I think Mark42 hit the nail on the head, "fast quiet boats are more fun and impressive to drive that fast loud ones". There is nothing more embarrassing (and satisfying) to watch than a ear-splitting go-fast getting wake-rocked by a silent, better designed boat.

i see your from ontario. i think our communist govt has passed a law restricting open pipes .i may be wrong ,it may be in the works though. you can get performance mufflers for them though.i watched a powerboating show where they installed them .they were cool.im a outboard guy so im not really up on this stuff but isnt there silent choise exhaust??

Re: Is this a novelty that will wear off.

There is very little performance gain with those types of exhaust systems on stock engines. The only benefit those exhaust systems give is when the heads are breathing better, there is more flow in the intake, and a better/bigger flowing carb, along with a better ignition system to light that additional fuel/air. On a stock engine if you see more than a few horsepower you will be lucky. It can even have an adverse effect. Too much freeflow in an exhaust system can reduce torque, so you might find your holeshot reduced.

Then there is the annoyance factor. I personally don't care to hear those boats wen I am out on the water. You can hear them things from miles away and there is nothing apealing about it. They are horrible to ride in, you can't talk to anyone else in the boat. My belief is if you came here to ask, I think you know deep down you will grow to hate the noise. The boat will not perform any better if the engine is stock, so you might as well run quiet. Good luck...
