I am looking at a motor with a cowling that says mercury 50hp. I am told the serial number is 8421109.

Is this a valid serial and, if so, what year/model does it go with?

Also, is there a good web resource to check serial #'s?

Re: is this a valid serial #?

Here's my suggestion:

Mercury did manufacture motors in belgium, with serial numbers that began with 8XXXXXX , BUT I dont think they ever made them with a number as high as yours, and the probability of seeing one in Portland is slim.

I believe your serial number is 6421109, manufactured in the USA.

Serial Number: 06421109 Model Number: 1050553

4cyl 50hp Circa 1983. Sound correct?

That's a nice motor. Would look like that attached.

Parts lists are available online at mercurypartsexpress.com

Stripes are a different color, but that looks exactly like it. It is listed as an 86'.

It is a HIKE for me to get to where it is, so I am trying to collect as much info as possible. says it has 145 compression accross the board. (I am going to do my own when I am there Just in case)

Anything particular to look out for when I go see it? I can only do one trip and I really don't want to come back without the motor?

thanks
