Could really do with some help on this on please?
I've bought a boat with a Mercury outboard. It was sold to me as a 50hp. I'd like to order spares but can't date the engine. The plate with the serial number is missing..bit worried about that!! Also it's been sprayed over...even more worrying!!! I know...I'm green tho!
The things I DO know are that it has a brown/gold band (scratched the paint off). It is 4 clinder, twin carb. Can't SEE any sign of a distributor. It's electric start.
Can anyone help.....please?
Also, is it regarded as a good engine?

Cheers.

Howard

It's a 1985 or 6 if it's the right band it should have the serial number stamped in the block

As Laddies stated,it will be a 1985 or 6 (only years Brownbands were made) It is at least a 50 as the 40's were 2 cylinders and single carb.
They are basically the same from 1976 to late 80's and the inline 4 is regarded as one of the best outboard configurations ever made.
