I'm not sure if the cooling system is working right. This is a new motor for me it has low hours, I installed a new impeller ( the old one was fine ) an ran it for 5 minutes not much water came out of the big hole at idle at higher speeds more shot out but it would come and go. ( thermostat?? ) the water is hot. I don't want to hurt anything. Whats the max temp this the head should get so I can watch it on the maiden voyage.

Thanks

Marc

Is the cylinder head hot to the touch, you should be able to hold your hand on the head for at least a 3 count.

Sweet motor!
Assuming it's the same as my Johnson, most of the cooling water exits lower with the exhaust so you cannot see or feel it. Only a fraction spits out that hole you can see and put your hand over. On mine it feels warm, but not too hot that it burns. I have never touched it at WOT (hard to reach while driving!) Agreed you should be able to touch the cylinder head. The thermostat housing is the highest thing on the head with 3 screws holding it. Mine has been in there 50 years, no problem. (No salt either).

green: exhaust relief, should get mist droplets at idle. red : water intake yellow : exhaust and most of the water.

Actually, that is the way it is supposed to be working. Your thermostat is doing what it is supposed to do. That motor has a thermostat controlled recirculating cooling system. When the thermostat is closed, the water is directed back down to the water pump for recirculating. When the water gets hot enough to open the thermostat, it is discharged. But the thermostat is not an open or closed situation. It is constantly checking the temperature and opens and closes as required to maintain the proper temp. Because not much heat is being generated at idle, they are often closed at that time, and opens when you go faster.

A small bypass allows some water discharge when the 'stat is closed. So, you will see a light spray when it is closed and a heavier discharge when it opens. What you see being blownout the back is only part of it--most of it goes out the underwater exhaust.

If you're concerned it's running too hot, replace the thermostat - an easy and inexpensive fix.
