I dropped the lower unit on my '72 20hp 'rude as per instructions in my manual. Everything came away fine but the driveshaft stayed in the shaft/block and left the lower unit.

I've never experienced this before, and just wondered if it's normal for these motors?

Just one more question......

The pin on the propellershaft that locks the propeller is like an elongated S, should the be straight on is it fine? The propeller has a bit of play too.

Re: Is this normal?

The prop pin should be straight, replace it.

The driveshaft is stuck in the crankshaft splines due to not being greased or being installed without the "O" Ring at its top groove (or both).

Use vise grips on some portion of the driveshaft that is not critical (non bearing area), then bang it out (hitting the vise grips) with a good size hammer. And no..... that's not normal!

Re: Is this normal?

Thought so, could I have done any damage to the lower unit gear...eg them being out of place due to no drive shaft being in there?

I shall attack the driveshaft that is happily sitting in the block tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.

I can't find a diagram of a '72 20hp but if you have pulled the drive shaft out of the lower unit what damage have you done to the water pump. It is normally the pin holding the pump impeller to the shaft that holds it down in the lower unit.

Re: Is this normal?

Well the lower unit came off without any resistance whatsoever. The driveshaft was clean and the splined end was left sticking out of the shaft.

The water pump and impeller need changing anyway, including all the rings.

I got this motor cheap a week ago, and the impeller was stiff and worn, water pump looked mauled with chunks out of the plate inside....a real state.

A new set has been ordered.

odds are the pump housing is walloed out. i dont think the impeller drive pin will clear the housing bore on an undamaged housing.
