Is this normal?

I finally got to and pulled the exhaust plate tonight continuing on w rebuild, just was curious about this amount of crap built up here in this area? Seems excessive especially on one side too.

Not too sure how it actually build up out in the edges cavities under the plate like that either, seems to be like back flow deposits.
