Is this normall

I buying a boat, and while test driving it, I noticed that it could reach relly high rpms almost 6000.. the boat is a 17' glastron bow rider, I think it whieghs near 1700 lbs, we had a load of aroud 500lbs including gear.. the motor is a 3.0 mercruiser with an alpha one sterndrive. the prop is a 19pitch ss merc marine vengance. after landing the boat I start to inspec the prop better, I look good, I gave is a tug towards me and away from the gearcase.. when I did the prop had some give, only about or less than 1/8" is this normall or should it be a conceern.. on the high rpms, are theese boats geared that low so that they pull better on a load?

the recommend rpms I believe is 4600 @ wot
the motor is 1990 3.0 mercruiser, with alpha one sterndrive

texas boater, If you are buying another boat, please PAY (yes those are CAPS) a marine mechanic to check it out for you. Your last motor was a disaster. And get a manual this time. Good luck, hope it works out. adrew

boaterntexas---Your rpms are definitely too high.Probably due to prop pitch.I'm not sure about the little play of the prop.I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be answering later today so hang cool and your questions will be answered.I took some vacation time this week so this is not my normal time on the boards.Happy Boating!!!

I would check the revs with a calibrated tachometer first. My boat was telling me 5200 rpms but it was actually only 4200 because the tach was not right. Turned out the tach setting had slipped to the 6 cylinder position. just a thought.
