I have tried Mark42's use of comet, wet sandpaper (600) and 3M restorer/wax and can not get the blue/purple metal flake to come back. It's still has that grayish color.

Any idea's on what I can try next? I have no idea how deep the flake goes and I'm afraid to go to deep.

No it's not - in the true sense anyway. It is discoloration in your polyester resin. There is no quick fix, as you've obviously found out. It's basically your clear coat being broken down by the ultraviolet rays of Mr. Sunshine.

I'll tell you right now, if you're looking for a temporary last resort, with minimal labor, to bring the color, & shine back to your old weathered boat, try Vaseline, it will absorb into the finish, and make it look like new, a little goes a long way, especially in the heat, or hot sun, but application, and removing the excess is easier this way.

I also find once it settles into the finish completely, whatever you put over it, wax, polish, etc. just tends to come out better, and last longer (it preserves some of the color, & shine).

Try a little spot, and see for yourself, it keeps getting deeper, & shinier,,, if you think that's good, wait till you try it on your aluminum parts like the winshield frame, or stainless, or chrome, deck fittings. Oh, and don't forget to try it on those old dryed out vinyl seats. Your biggest problem, is just the minor trouble of removing the excess, and that comes off after it's absorbed in good.
