I posted on here about my LU not working awhile back. I dropped it into reverse too quickly out of fast idle. It was recommended that I take a look at my shift shaft...so I pulled the PH and the shift shaft and it was fine....no twist, no rust...straight as an arrow. So I took it to a shop and they said they would fix the reverse. Calls me and says the reverse gear and clutch dog are worn, and that?s the problem. That makes sense to me. I get it back and put it in the water and go to back it off the trailer, and reverse starts to work, but as soon as I get a real load on it, I hear a loud bang, then click click click....same clicking from b4 I took it to him. I take it back and he says the cables just need to be adjusted, but leave it with him so he can look it over....he said he would take it to the water and test it. I get it back again, and same thing....go to back off the trailer and just the click click click...no bang this time. I just called him back and he got all defensive right away and said he replaced the worn parts and that?s it, must be something else. I don?t think he put it back right, and it popped out of gear (the loud bang), and ruined the new parts. he says there?s no way that happened..."its all splined, its just a couple parts that go back together, there?s no adjustments that could even be done" so my question is.....is it possible to put it back together wrong, so that the new parts broke? Or could there be something else wrong that is causing it to act exactly like before I took it to him? He?s says he tested it on the dyno and water and it acted fine, but both times it failed right away for me.

Thanks

What did he charge you all in so far? Seems reasonable to expect a repair to last at least long enough to back out from the dock. Something's not right. Did he actually take it out after making his "adjustments" the second time?

In cases like this you need to make him realize the path of least resistance is making you happy. Be a pain in the rear. Go back ask him to show you exactly what he did, including putting the boat in the water.

Depending on your investment you could take him to court if you felt like being a real PITA. He'd look pretty stupid trying to explain how he took your money and couldn't give you a working boat...twice.

Perhaps the the shifting mechanism is not fully engaging or unable to remain engaged under load.It could be engine clutch lever? broken spline in shift rod?or shift mechanism in lower unit is faulty? you did hit something. Try to negotiate with your mechanic or find a new one either way you need some more investigating.

Re: is this shop screwing me for LU repair

it was $650, which is way more then i can afford to spend twice to have someone else look into it. i dont think he took it out after making the adjustments. he says he did, but i think somethings off cause he said it works fine, and everytime i put it in it dosent work.

i didnt hit anything, i dropped it into gear too quickly out of fast idle, but same idea i guess. so it could be something else, then? when i said he said it was cable adjustment issue, he also looked at the whole top side shifting mech. i would assume, since he didnt say anything bout it, that it is good. the shift rod didnt have any splines broken....i checked that when i was investigating the shift rod. that leaves shift mech. or clutch lever from what you mentioned. thanks, thats what i'm looking for....what else could be wrong so i dont get surprised by anything, since a lot of my trust is gone with this dude. does it seem like he would have checked all that stuff before giving it back to me?

look on the techs wall, ask to see the school certification for Yamaha Drive train.
if its not there find a real dealer.
if its there cross your fingers and take it back.

umm, i'm pretty sure he dosent have anything like that on the wall. so if i just take it somewhere else, i would have to pay the same again, so dont want to go that route yet.

he called back last nite and was a lot more friendly. he said he had a 90 horse motor there with a working lower unit, and he would put it on and test it out....that would prove if it was the lower unit or something else.....really just the cables of shift shaft tho. i guess he is certain the problem lies in those....i am certain its not.

Is this an authorized Yamaha repair shop? Did he say that he put new parts in the motor? If he did, ask him for the part numbers and if they were genuine Yamaha parts?

Ask him for the part numbers of the parts he installed. My guess is that he cannot give them to you because he didn't use new parts. I don't think that he has a factory manual for your motor. You need to look elsewhere.
