Re: is this to hot

The trick I heard is that is you can keep your fingers on the engine while you count S.L.O.W. This should take 3 - 4 seconds. If you can't keep your hand on there, it is too hot.

Since there is no tell-tale, maybe water isn't getting from the lower unit to the upper parts. There is a tube that connects them, maybe check to see if it is connected as it should be. I am not sure on your engine, but I believe it fits into the impellar housing.
If that's not it, your thermostat may be bad.
Do you have a manual? If not, I would definately get one if you are going to do any work yourself. Clymer's manuals aren't bad. You can get them from this website. Just scroll to the bottom and follow the link. I don't know how competitive their prices are, though.

I am just learning, too, so take what I have said with a grain of salt. Maybe some of the pro's that visit this board can help more.

Good luck!

Jason

I've got a 1971 60HP Johnson 3 Cyl. It has has a port on the back side of the motor for water to exit, but does not have the solid stream of water that other motors have for a tell tell. Once my motor is warmed up, I get warm, not hot, water from the port.
I can touch anywhere on the motor and not have it burn my hand no matter how long I hold it there.

If in doubt, replace your impeller and thermostat.
Much better than risking damaging you motor.

Put your hand anywhere on the cylinder head or the block. The head is usually acessible. Do it quick the first time so if it is hot, your don't burn your fingers. You should be able to count to 3 or four slowly without pain. I have heard of people shaking a couple drops of water off their hand onto the head (If it imediately evaporates or sizzles, then the impellor is bad or water tube is blocked), but be careful. Any more than a couple drops could cause your block or head to crack. If you have any question whether it is too hot or not after that, change the impeller. It is usually not too hard or expensive with a repair manual at you disposal, yet it will save you the cost of a new motor and will make sure you do not get stranded in the water.

Change your impellar and check your thermostat if you have one. If you think its too hot it probably is. Maintenance is best done at home not on the lake and thats where you will be when it breaks. Its always right to do the repairs/maintenance when you find it, you can be talked out of it, but will pay in the end. Boat motors are forgiving to a point. Get a manual it will answer alot of your questions.
