800 is what the guy wants says hull in excellent condition and motor is a 2.3 volvo penta that needs new starter and tune up with a rebuilt carb. Said interior was in rough shape. Sent a picture of interior and looks like all wood needs to be replaced from what I can see through the over grown weed garden.

I just bought a boat and I am learning that the most important thing is whether the deck, stringers and transom are rotted and if the foam is waterlogged. Interior and mechanical work is minor compared to it.

Re: is this worth trying to fix up?

This boat has been sitting for a long time. The picture of the interior definitely has me scared of it. I don't mind doing some work just don't want it to be so big of a project that I would just get disgusted with it and sink a small fortune in. Especially being a first boat.

I have looked on here for how to upload a picture but no luck. Just using my android phone

Re: is this worth trying to fix up?

Anything is possible, but when you ask 'is it worth it?' EXACTLY what do you mean?

Is it worth the time, effort & money to make it seaworthy & safe for your family to use. Sure......

Is it going to be worth the money & time (your labor) in the end to recoup all of your money including the $800 purchase price. No probably not, more to the point perhaps half.

It looks like a nearly 30yr old boat. Sure, you've rebuilt it from stem to stern, torn down to the bare hull & completely redone, but it's still not a $10K runabout. Even if you put $10K into it. Boats don't work like old, rare, collector cars. More often then not they're just old.

HOWEVER, if you choose to rehab this $800 boat, and spend $2200 doing it, maybe a little less, or you could certainly spend more, you'll have a boat that will safely & reliably provide great boating seasons for a very long time. It will also be significantly 'better' & safer then 95% of the boats for sale in your market for 1.5-2times as much. So w/ your 'free' labor, you've gotten a boat that can't be replaced for what you've spent.

So, do YOU think it's worth it?

Only you know you're boat rebuild funding & location situations. Your access to tools & materials or help when you need another set of hands & eyes. Your ability to overcome the obstacles as they come (and be aware they will come).

Read thru some of the resto threads, you'll quickly see what's involved & what's necessary to rehab an older fiberglass boat.

Being here 1st, asking questions & poking around will help you make better, more informed decisions when you find a boat you're interested in.

If you can get the seller to send pix, post them. It's always a huge help to see what you're seeing..........

Welcome to the iboats dry dock...

There's an android photobucket app, but I'm not familiar w/ how it works, but many of us use Photobucket to upload pix:

And post them IN our reply, not as attachments that must be opened.........

Ok there's the pic. Finally figured out how to do it. Thanks again jb. I really do appreciate the time you take in your responses. I have decided against taking this on. Feel like it may be a bit much for me to take on as a first boat restoration.

RUN.

Not to be critical, but you can find a much better rehab project for the same (or even lesser) $.

Wow! I'm glad you decided against purchasing that floating pot farm. So the VP only needs a starter and tune-up. Sure! Wise move to avoid this one, which may be one of the worst "garden boats" here.

Your boat is out there. :)

Re: is this worth trying to fix up?

What kind of person tries to sell a boat with a garden in it? I mean 1 hour of work and this guy could have maybe sold that thing. I'm glad you actually asked the "pro's" here before spending your hard earned cash.
