Is water getting in the lower unit?

I have a 1985, 35hp Mercury outboard. Every year I change the gear oil in the lower unit. I know they say the oil should not look light in beige color because that could mean water is getting into the lower unit. When I drain the oil, it obviously does not look like it does when it goes in. Kind of just a mirkier shade to new oil. Is this normal? I've replaced the gaskets on the drain plug an fill plug. What would be the next thing to replace that would cause water to get in? Thanks.

That sounds about right. If it's been setting unused for a week or better you will see the water (if any) come out first. Some discoloration in the gear oil during a season of use is acceptable.

Once oil and water mix to the point it changes the color of the oil the color does not change back no matter how long it sits.

If you are concerned have a vacume and pressure test before you replace anything. Else you could be throwin bucks where there is no problem.
