Hello every one,
I am buying a pontoon with a 2005 90hrs yamaha out board. From reading all the post, I feel that Yamaha has many problems. Please let me know which brand is better, Yamaha, Honda, Johnson or Murcury ?

Thanks so much.

2-stroke?
Yamaha's are great engines, in no way more problems than the other makes IMO.
Most problems are usually from lack of maintenance etc , same with the others.
For a ponton boat , the 2-stroke 90hp Yamaha would not be my first choice, its a light, low c.i engine, best suited for lighter boats IMO.

Which is better: ford, chevy, dodge, toyota?SOMEONE has had a bad outboard of every make and model that is out there.I (and several friends) have had great luck with Yammys. Some havent. Some like mercs, some do not.As long as you care for it,then it will give you good service. If you neglect it,then it will turn into a rather expensive boat anchor.

No problem with most Yamaha, 2-stroke or 4-stroke.
I have a Yamaha F115 4-stroke myself (I have used it 3 seasons now).

My father has a 1984 Yamaha 70 2 stroke that has been 100% trouble free since he purchased it brand new. He liked it so much he recently paid a lot of extra money out of his pocket to ensure that his new Lund did NOT come with a Mercury (though all Lunds these days normally come with Mercs standard), but instead a 2004 Yamaha 150 fuel injected 4 stroke. He loves it.

We're both believers, they're great motors. Then again I see no rational reason to discount the other brands, I'm sure they all are good these days.

I have about 100 hours on a yamaha F150 and it has been flawless so far. My brother has 800 hours on twin 200 yamaha SWS 2 strokes and they have been great as well. I think all of the brands you mentioned are decent. A lot of times it comes down to local dealer support. Like others have mentioned, If you do the recommended maintenance, you are not likely to have too many problems. In my opinion, Yamaha makes one of the better outboards available today.

Matt,
There is no "one" perfect outboard brand. All the bad ones have died off and only the good ones are left. In your case, I would ask peoples opinion on the specific make, model, and year of your outboard. You will get a lot better responses if you narrow your question. Example, OMC has had winners, V4's from the 80's and total loosers, Early model Ficht outboards. Now they are on a winning roll once again with their E-tecs. Also, a lot of manufacturers play "name who made that part" where they mix and match powerheads, lower units and all othere odds and ends. Example, Yamaha made the powerheads used in the mercury line for many years. Mercury rebrands tohatsu's and calls them mercs, Honda uses mercury lower units....

Nav

quote by mattt
__________________________________________________
Please let me know which brand is better, Yamaha, Honda, Johnson or Mercury?
__________________________________________________
Mattt it’s a personal preference ask one person they will say Mercury ask another and they will say Yammy. Do some more research yammy made stuff for Mercury and Suzuki makes stuff for Johnson and so on and so forth. I personally think that Honda is the best. I have a Yammy and love it also have a 1957 Johnson that still runs good. Do the regular maintenance and you cannot go wrong with any outboard that is still in production today. If you sluff of on the maintenance they will all let you down and you will be rowing in or have to get a towrope. Almost forgot spent the extra money for 100% synthetic oil just ask member Lubedude
:D

On a slightly related topic, I read a recent news release in a snowmobile magazine (of all places) that the Johnson 4 stroke line is going to be discontinued very shortly...I think after this year if memory serves. BRP is going to sell only 2 stroke E-TEC Evinrudes from then on. They're lighter, BRP claims that they actually burn cleaner than a 4 stroke, and the EPA agrees and gave them a "thank you" award of some type to back it up.

Interesting stuff, in my opinion.

Re: Is Yamaha a good motor compare to other ?

Here it is...I knew I could find it if I looked a bit:

"BRP (EVINRUDE AND JOHNSON)

Evinrude again has expanded its E-Tec line of engines with the introduction of V-4 models in 115 and 130 horsepower versions and small block V-6 models in 150, 175 and 200 horsepower. These new E-Tecs employ a variable exhaust baffle to tune the exhaust for low-end torque and high-speed power.

The E-Tec line now is complete from 40 to 250 horsepower. Expect smaller engines in the near future. I have run most of these models and they are strong, smooth and quiet engines. Evinrude now offers the 200 hp E-Tec in two displacements. The 2.5L 200 hp engine is intended for lightweight, high speed bass boat applications while the 200 hp 3.3L is intended for larger, heavier boats.

The EPA awarded Evinrude E-Tec the 2004 Clean Air Excellence Award, marking the first time an outboard engine has ever won this award for improving air quality. All the E-Tecs are California Air Resources Board (CARB) 3-star-rated engines.

In a show of support for clean two-stroke technology, BRP has discontinued the sale of four-stroke engines in the 40 hp and up range in the Johnson line. These engines had been built by Suzuki. Johnson four-strokes will continue to be available from 2.5 to 30 hp; the 2.5 won’t be available until early spring 2006.

Johnson carbureted two-strokes will continue to be available from 3.5 to 175 hp. Bombardier claims to have enough EPA clean air credits to be able to build these engines for several years to come."

It is interesting stuff, but it sounds a lot like dealer speak to me.

There is no etec in 15 HP and down, I don't believe BRP will walk away from that range. Some etecs are lighter than 4 stroke counterparts and some are not. ETEC is strong technology and is well received, no doubt about that.
