I have a 1977 9.9 Johnson. Third time started I notice air coming out of the water intake. Also water was coming out somewhere around the top end. I did not notice before. I did think I heard small pop from engine before I noticed issue. Tell tail was working. Thanks

Interesting. Of all the thousands of motors I've started in my life, I don't remember ever seeing air coming out the water intake when starting. Nor even looking for it.

New to me engine. Ran twice before I got it home. Was running after starter fix and I thought I heard a slight pop sound. I also notice water up high near where middle housing meets motor. Did not see first time I ran it. Could it be exhaust pushing into the water and exhaust plate.

I love it, air is not coming from any motor I know of. You see exhaust bubbles but not air.

Yes most likely exhaust which is air. It comes out the water intake to pump. I believe a gasket might have blown out. Just looking if sometime else. Water coming out also below motor between motor housing and lower end.

I think you need the drop the GC and perform a colonosscopy up the exhaust housing

make certain the housing seals against the GC exhaust vaity ...try a sealant when reinstalling the GC.
