So I recently had an issue with an older motor guide where the motor would rock furioulsy after about 10-15 seconds of operations. After I let off, it would go fine again for another 10-15 seconds and shake furiously again. Now, i recently replaced the motor guide with a new minn kota 45 edge and it is doing the same thing. On lower speeds its not bad, however on speed 4 and 5 i can only get about 15 seconds of solid use. I've posted a video, any information would be great. By the way, it is installed on a 99 bass tracker 165.

Hmmm, my father had a brand new Minn Kota with the same issue. Turned out that the furious rocking was due to the motor being turned on and off rapidly like a strobe light due to a faulty inline fuse and overly redundant wiring causing the voltage to jump up and down. Use a multi-meter and connect the leads into the power cables a few inches from the head. Spin up the motor and keep an eye on the meter, it should always read in the 12ish region. If the voltage is jumping up and down, you have a power transport issue. Trace the power cables and make sure they are connected directly and properly to the battery bypassing any switches (eliminate any variables). Now connect the meter just before the inline fuse and monitor the voltage, it should read a steady 12. If it operates smoothly look into replacing the inline fuse and housing. But if the problem persists then the power issue may be inside of the unit, at that point I would contact Minn Kota. Their customer service is fantastic, may even replace the entire unit for you.

Two totally different motors with the same characteristic points to a wiring/power distribution issue and not a motor issue. If the power system has an auto reset circuit breaker it could be the value of that breaker is too low. Fuses either work or they don't. Although the cycling is a fair bit rapid for a breaker problem, I still would not dismiss that as the issue. Inspect all wiring and connections carefully.

WOW this is interesting to see and I have to watch to see what caused this. Obviously it is power issues, unless fish are attaching the trolling motor causing that... So like Silvertip pointed out, two different manufacturers of trolling motors causing the same problem is beyond reason or logic. So it has to be wiring issue...
