It finally happened to me: Stuck oil filter

I never thought it would happen, but it did today. The oil filter on my 305 Mercruiser somehow bonded itself to the block.

I tried 3 different wrenches, and none worked. As a last resort, I even used the 'stick a screwdriver through the side trick'.. No go.
To make matters worse, I managed to tear the filter in half leaving only a ragged shard of metal.

Several new curse-words later, I decided to get help from the internet and found a way to remove the filter by making a spanner wrench to go inside the smaller holes in the filter and using a long screwdriver to spin it off.

I always lube the filter o-ring when I install the filters as well as being careful not to tighten it too much. I'm not sure what happened.

A seemingly simple maintenance issue turned into a 3 hour endeavor! Don't let this happen to you.

It was suggested you use only a good quality oil filter wrench and coat BOTH sides of the o-ring with silicone/lithium grease. And of course, do not over-tighten it.

I had a thought however... How about an oil-filter re-location kit? Would this be a good idea on an I/O engine?

My filter isn't the easiest thing to get to.
I thought relocating the filter somewhere to get 100% access would be better.
This is the only Chevy engine I've owned, and I'm not impressed with the oil filter location as it sits right up next to the flywheel housing. It's almost impossible to get a wrench around it (especially in a boat)

Thanks,

H.

Mercruiser/quicksilver makes one that can be purchased from any dealer. It moves the oil filter to the front of the engine and bolts to the exhaust riser. Great on any boat, but even better on twin engine boats.

I put a 'relocation' kit on my V6 for about 7 years now and LOVE it! Oil and filter changes take about 10 minutes and I don't end up with oil in the bilge either. :) :) :) :) :) :)

I made the kit up from aftermarket bits for about half the price of the Merc kit. Added bonus of the kit (it has 2 x 3/4" hoses to carry the oil to and from the remote filter) is that the pressure stays higher and the engine temp (closed cooling) stays lower.

Chris................

If you used grease to lube the filter seal ring, that is your problem. For some reason, grease is just like glue. Use some of the new engine oil and they work fine. Warming the engine first also helps.

I spent 3 days trying to get the oil filter that was on my boat when I bought it. Tried various filter wrenches..crushed in the sides, eventually ripped it in half. I then torn the crap out of what was left. Ended up with just the top STILL stuck to engine. FINALLY chisled it off. I swear that the last owner used gorilla glue instead of oil to lube the gasket!

Yup...I love my boat...I have the scars to prove it.

There are two kinds of people..those who have had a stuck filter, and those who will. Now, does anyone have a suggestion for a Chevy STARTER relocation kit! I can handle filters.

Chevy starter relocation kit? Easy, buy a Ford.

;)
When tightening an oil filter, use new oil to lube gasket ring, then only hand tighten. I have never used a wrench to tighten an oil filter.

Ok ...speaking of a stuck filter, first liar never has a chance...

I had an 1986 Sea Arrow 18' 305 Chevy I/O. Filter was stuck...and how. Did the whole routine... filter wrench , screwdriver thru the filter...you name it. Finally the filter is torn completely off except for the part that screws on the block adapter..

Two choices pull the engine or stand on my head and try to air chizzle the rest off. Went the air chizzle route...half a day later (upside down and barely able to get under the engine with one arm and the air tool) I finally get to the problem.....

ONE OF THE BOLTS HOLDING THE FILTER ADAPTER TO THE ENGINE BLOCK HAD VIBRATED DOWN JUST ENOUGH TO SNAG ON ONE OF THE SMALL HOLES ENCIRCLING THE FILTER NEXT TO THE GASKET!!!

When I run into a filter that seems like it is going to crush before it comes off, I use two oil filter wrenches stacked on top of each other and a rag between the wrenches and filter.By using this method you dissapate the squeezing on the filter and it will spin.
