It runs!!

After sitting since 1985, the Evinrude 90 on my current project boat-fired right up!

Of course, I did the following before an attempt. I was amazed at how clean everything inside was.

1. Rebuilt carburetors.
2. Replaced water pump.
3. Rebuilt fuel pump.
4. Replaced every hose under the hood.
5. Had a sticky starter bendix. Had to free that up.

And Viola!

Man is good to smell two stroke exhaust again!

I encourage everyone to go out there and find those oldies-they'll run.

Wow! - well done, that's inspirational.

I can hear and smell it from here ;)

My father's got an Evinrude 5hp that hasn't been used for over 10 years. We're looking at tackling that some time soon....

Hi DJ,

Aren't old motors fun... I recently brought back to life a 1960 10 hp Johnson which had been in storage since 1961. Replaced/went through the same things (except the bendix - the rope starter needed a new spring) and more. Once I got fuel into the system it started on the 5th pull. Once I got it adjusted properly its (so far) starting on the first or second pull and runs like a champ!

-John

John, Kiwi,

Thanks for the kind words. It is a thrill to bring back to life an ancient engine.

John, congrat's on finding that pristine "60" 10 hp. I'll bet that was a thrill to see it fire off!

Kiwi, go for the project, you'll love it.

I just completed a resto. on a "66" Lightwin 3 hp. (the folding type)-Evinrude.

My father bought this engine brand new. I'll bet he put 2000 hours on it. I put some on it to as a boy. Dunked it more than once! Mostly duck hunting!

He gave it to me about 10 years ago. I'm going to present it to him, this summer, as a gift on his 80-th. birthday.

He'll get to use it. He now lives on a lake and still has the Grumman Sport Canoe that it used to on.

It'll be great memories for both of us.

DJ

A great idea for your father's 80th !

I'll bet he has some interesting stories from his days in the USAAF (you mentioned that in an earlier post). I've done a lot of reading about those times - incredible stuff. Those guys took bravery to a level way beyond anything seen in more recent times.

Good to hear that he's obviously still enjoying his boating.

Kiwi,

Bravery! We can't imagine!! He was a very young man when he flew those Liberators. (B-24, 4-1200 hp. Wright Cyclone engines-WOW!). Something I could not have done!

He is very much still enjoying boating. He runs the Montauk I redid for him back in "95". 17' with a 70 Johnson. 8 hp. Honda kicker!

After the Air Force, he was a wildlife biologist. In other words, he hunted and fished for a living. He knows more about the environment than anyone. You get to know your surroundings with a paddle or a 3 hp. engine!! Something he passed on to me-I'm grateful.

The 2000 hours on a 3 hp. "rude" is no joke or imagination. I remember, personally running five gallons of gas through it on trips to Canada.

The "3" was worn out. It needed every bushing, bearing, etc. Thank God for OMC's excellent parts retention policy. Man, it's great to see it run again. Dad, WILL be pleased.

Can't wait.

Re: It runs!!

DJ

I hope I'm still boating when I'm your father's age. He obviously lives life to the full and sets a good example for the rest of us.

It's not often you hear of an Evinrude outboard getting worn out, but yours sure has given some service. I suppose you'll get another 2000 hours out of it now with the rebuild...

My great-uncle was a navigator on an RAF Mosquito (2x Supercharged V12 Rolls Royce Merlins on a wooden airframe). He was shot down behind enemy lines and was taken as a POW by the Germans. I could never get him to talk about those experiences, which was a shame as he's passed on now. I understand that many WWII servicemen were like this, not wanting to talk about it.

I've always had an interest in the planes from that era. Say, isn't Arizona the place to go for seeing old planes?

Re: It runs!!

A good place to check out planes is the Air Force museum at Wright Patterson Air Force Base at Dayton OH. Grew up near there as a kid and went several times each year. Only thing that I don't like about the Museum is that none of those birds will ever fly again. It is a shame. The last time I was there I was coming home from the EAA fly-in at Oshkosh, WI. Seeing some of the very same aircraft flying really changed my feelings for those museum queens.

I just finished tinkering with a 1953 5 horse Johnson myself. It is amazing these things just keep going and going. A little TLC and I think my boy will enjoy it just like I have.

Re: It runs!!

All,

The Confederate Air Force has a big following here in AZ. The Champlin aircraft museum is about six miles from me. It is VERY well done and staffed entirely by volunteers. Some of which flew those old warbirds. Truly fascinating!

Kiwi, you're right about the WWII vet's. They WILL NOT talk about it. It must have been truly awful. My mother tells me that my dad was a DIFFERENT person when he came back. Still had all the same qualities, just magnified. He is a VERY intense person.

My hats off to those folks, and the kids that are fighting the war against terrorism today. God Bless Them!

Re: It runs!!

My Father-In-Law flew the B-24 in the Pacific. He went on to retire with 23 years of service in the USAF. He has been tormented by nightmares ever since the war. These days, he's confined to a nursing home and gets confused easily, but he still flies combat missions everyday. Nearly 60 years later, it's all still very real to him. I've never met a finer American!!! :)

Re: It runs!!

Crab Bait,

Whew!! Merchant Seamen. Those folks were truly the unsung heroes of WWI and WWII.

Their losses were more than any other branch of service. Steaming across "shark and Wolfpack infested" waters in an old boat that wouldn't go over 10 knots was true heroism. They were basically defenseless. Yet, they knew those supplies had to get through to starving England and our troops all over the world.

There is an old Liberty ship tied up in Baltimore-it goes by the name John Brown. She has been completely refurbished and she sails once a year with the volunteers and the folks that donate to the restoration project. There was a great article about her in this months WWII Magazine.
