I finally got rid of all the wood from that big elm we cut down in our yard. I figure we had about 8 or 9 ricks of wood in it. I want to thank our very own External Combustion for coming over and cutting the stump down for me. I ended up buying an 18" bar for my saw to cut the big chunks up to managable size. It took all toll 3 gallons of premix, 1+ gallons of bar oil alot of cold beer and work. now I need to get some top soil to fill in holes the limbs left when they dropped and where I ground out the stump. On to the next projects for the spring. :D

There's a way to mod your chain so that this could've gone a bit faster. Like any mod, this is at your own risk, of course. The chains they sell at most of the big DIY stores are 'low kickback' chains - that means that they are not so aggressive. Well, very non aggressive, actually. There's a 'cut depth guide' on the chain - I've found that by fileing this down about 1/8 inch or so the chain bites better. I can cut more wood, and faster, than with an unmodified chain. It does make quite a difference in that. I haven't run into any problems with kickback, or 'pulling' either.

Now, you can buy chains that aren't so anti-kickback. I've thought about that, but probably need more experience with the saw before I go that route, even if I can (The chainsaw I have - Poulan WildThing - seems to have a narrower bar than one of those chains will fit to).

I have a pullon pro 260 with an 18" bar that is a POS it went air mail accross the yard last week after the handle broke and wouldn't start. I had ground the rakers down on it and it cut alot better I am giving it to a friend for parts (he has one too). That said I bought a Stihl MS250 in december and I wish I had saved the $200 I wasted on the poulan and added some and just bought a stihl to begin with.

What? No pictures? :D

Sounds like you guys did a good job. Once you move up to a real chainsaw you can never go back. v1_0 is correct about different types of chain. Most saws come with low vibe and/or low kickback chain. I don't know about modifying them as the cutting tooth is different on the more aggressive chain. You can move up to the more aggressive chain as long as you have a saw with enough power (you do). I use semi-chisel chains and they are roughly 2x as fast as the low kickback chains. They're in the middle. I've never tried a full chisel or skip tooth...
