Since this was the first nest found it may have served as a training exercise for members of the team that will be working in other areas.

Reminds me of the Africanized "Killer Bees" that were going to wipe out Texas and the southern states during the 70's. Even made several movies about it. Lol

speaking of the 70s, i think that is when the friut fly was going to kill off all humans due to no fruit being polinated.
